On a road trip, currently in Moab. This part fell off. I don’t have the tool to reattach. All the bike shops are closed in the area and I’m hoping to take advantage of my one morning to ride some epic trails before getting back on the road.
Can I ride safely without this part?

Not crucial to safety, but crucial if you ever want to take the crank arm off.
I think you just need it for when you want to remove the crank
It also helps keep dirt and muck out of that crease.
You can pretty easily fashion a spanner to put that back on. Even a set of needle nose pliers will help you replace it.. Blue loctite is your friend.
LBS should pop it back on for free
They had a batch or three of these they didn’t use locktite on. I lost mine a couple times and then lost it For good. New part is cheap but you will have to order it. Just hang onto the cap until you can locktite it and install properly.
Mine fell off and I didn’t notice until the LBS told me a year later
I’ve found a dozen of these doing maintenance and building on our local bike park
Thanks for all the replies! My hopes of riding slick rock aren’t dashed after all!
Mine popped off last month. Thankfully, I found it on the pavement. My LBS re-installed it free. I think it’s reverse threaded and they have the special spanner. Guy at the LBS said, “those always come off”.
You guys have those?
I have a growing collection of these just from finding them on the trails. Been hoping to see someone who was missing theirs and get some karma irl but that hasn’t happened yet.
