Hello! I’m searching for a bike that could be a cross between a world touring bike (sturdy, can load lots of panniers, built for comfort) and a Bikepacking / gravel bike (for speed, agility) – I’m not going to be touring the world, but I’d like to try parts of the GNBR, do another Euro Velo route, and try some single track in New Zealand. Trips that would be around one month long and would carry about 25-30lbs (or less) of gear. The reason for the panniers is that we have teens and need to carry some of their items on certain trips. I would prefer frame bag/seat bag – but would like to have the option of panniers if possible for longer trips.

Here are some options. Tell me if these would be a good cross for what I’m looking for.

1.)Specialized Diverge
2.) Tried a Bulls Grinder (can’t remember which one) while in Germany and loved it, but not sure it’s the right one…
3.)Kona Libre
4.) Kona Sutra LTD
5.) Salsa Journeyer (or should I go to Warbird)
6.) Canyon Grizl
7.) or what’s your options that you’d recommend?

Things I really want:
Versatility to go for a weekend or a month
Light!
Great on ascents

Thanks for helping!

  1. Tumbleweed Stargazer on the beefier end of this spectrum. In the same realm as Kona Sutra LTD. Sturdy frame, comfortable and stable geometry. Great loaded or unloaded. The frame itself is not light, but it can handle anything, and you can build with lighter components. Best bike I’ve ever had, definitely a drop bar all-terrain touring bike, not a gravel bike.
