You should be worried about the old carbon style. I’ll send you my address to free you from the worry. It’s what friends are for.
I’d have someone check the carbon out personally (I know nothing about it), but that’d be a sick potential frame.
My guiding light is I always have to keep not having bikes that might fail catastrophically-so I would pass.
Beautiful frame, well preserved. I would build it.
These lugged and bonded frames shouldn’t be trusted unless they’ve been thoroughly examined and stress tested. The bonding is over 25 years old and can fail catastrophically and without warning. Also, the “carbon fiber” these are made from is primitive, often more similar to fiberglass than modern carbon fiber. We’ve got a 60cm Cadex rotting in our warehouse, plus a slightly more modern carbon Trek MTB. Almost unsellable due to liability concerns.
YMMV, but be careful.
Free frame that may or may not have life left, or fit for that matter, +$8k parts and wheels, sounds like a neato investment. What could go wrong?

Build.
If you do decide to build it, spend very little money on parts as the frame may fall apart on you. Also, build it up to be a very light duty bike. 1×9 drivetrain, flat or moustache bars, no racks, no fenders, just a nice fair weather town cruiser. Purposely build it to not go fast or go off road.

I’ve turned down two even though my heart waaaaannnnts them.
I have had/looked at a few road/cyclocross that have aluminum tubes instead of the carbon fiber ones. Most people here seem to be worried about the carbon fiber and the bonds but if those Aluminium parts are the same cast ones – they really love to crack. Mostly the headtube and the seatpost clamp area.

That’s dreamy. An old guy who hits up the mission in Toronto rides one spray painted grey with panniers and some old semi Slicks. Looks happy as ever with it.

Yeah I don’t care much for CF bikes but like anything else it’s good until it isn’t.

I had one. After I bought it I took it the my local shop to get serviced. The bike shop guy told me the same thing people are saying in this thread. He scared me. I still rode it, but I was too scared to *really* use it. I probably put a 100 miles on it before I tossed it.
Funny thing is that I’ve never seen any proof of old carbon frame failure. If theyre as dangerous as people say, wouldn’t there be a lot of documentation? It feels as though people are just repeating what they’ve heard. Just food for thought.

But I would only use it to ride around the suburbs, looking cool as shit while I pick up my bread & milk from the shops.
Tyre clearance will probably be pathetic. Do you intend to xbike on a pair of 700 x 23?

I actually have one of these, I use it as a just a nice bike to ride, no racing etc, but it’s nice just to head out on for an hour or so
I had one of those treks (partially carbon) and it was crazy light but flexed a lot- so much it made me not like it
