Okay, every time I find a garmin I go down the rabbit hole on pros and cons. I really want the garmin 1040 and I’d also like to get a speed sensor and cadence counter. My issue is I don’t have a PO Box yet so I’ll be using the LBS, which limited on what they have. I don’t mind having them to order it for me. I have part numbers so it shouldn’t be an issue.
I’m trying to find some good sources here, but there isn’t a definitive source on what I’m looking for. My main question is, is the 1040 too much? Should I like the look, but I don’t plan on riding it more than 6 hours at a time. Maybe I will, but I doubt it. Also I’d want an out front mount, but I’m not opposed to it being mounted on the frame. Does anyone else have the 1040, and how do you have it mounted? I’ll be stopping by my LBS to talk to them it too.

I bought a 540 and i’m happy with it. I didnt care for a touch screen since i wanted to focus on riding.
Get the 1040, you won’t regret it. I love my 1040. Is it too much? Yeah probably but it’s great because it has all the bells and whistles. Extra large touchscreen makes it easy to see and use. And with the bigger battery you can go on more rides before having to charge. If you’re gonna get the speed and cadence sensors, might as well get the bundle with the heart rate monitor. So much data. It comes with various mounts out of the box so you can figure out what you prefer. I use an aftermarket out front stem mount, it’s more symmetrical and I have my light mounted underneath for night rides. Contemplating getting a varia radar.
I got the Explore 2 and I like it. Granted I’m not too concerned with many of the health metrics. But I don’t really understand why most people don’t get the edge explore 2 for my purposes of navigation and basic tracking it’s perfect and I’m pretty sure the only thing I’m sacrificing is like they’re advanced training programs? Idk. Worth a look tho
If you don’t use the training & performance metrics, then just get an Edge Explore 2.
My vote is for wahoo. Much more user-friendly and doesn’t get you lost
I have the 840 and I literally never think about not getting the 1040
Nice picture.
Maybe get a watch? I use my Fenix 7 on the bike aswell.
