My initial thoughts is that is heavily rusted in place. I have already put some rust remover around the spindle but still wouldn't budge with repeated hits with a mallet. Any ideas how what else to do?
I hope you’re not using a rubber mallet. Those things don’t weight enough to do anything.
If you’re getting rid of the crankset then just hit it with a 5 pound iron (not rubber) mallet using big boy strength. I’m 90 percent sure one single hit made with conviction and rage will free it. Personally, I use deadblow mallets…even the light ones work pretty well.
If you’re keeping the crankset, just do the foregoing, but with a piece of wood in between the spindle and your mallet strikes. Or just a plain deadblow mallet.
