Found this bike from my parents’ house and have used it for multiple years now, but only recently started working on it as I got more interested in bikes, cycling and wrenching. It didn’t shift gears and the brakes were not great either.
After fixing it both at a shop and myself the only thing left for now is replacing shifter cables and housing in the front. It works well as a 7 speed, but I’d rather fix the front shifter than try to convert it to 1x.
Wrenching is a lot of fun and also satisfying when you get something to work. I was full of joy when I got the rear gears adjusted to shift almost perfectly (as perfectly as they can with a stretched chain and an old cassette). Also I’ve now learned that it’s better to buy proper tools right away after buying cheap cable cutters, which made me think that gnawing on the brake cable with my teeth would have been a better alternative than using those.

Nice work, looks clean!
Really solid bones on this thing! Already looks sweet. If you have trouble setting up 3x chainrings (like I always do) get yourself a thumbie shifter if only for the front that you can run friction. Friction shifting the front is nice because it lets you make minor adjustments if certain chainring/cassette combos cause excess rubbing, and then you don’t have to worry about indexing at all.
