I just purchased a used wheelset with I9 hubs. The previous owner said that they were just serviced, but I’m running into an issue where when I tighten the rear axle to spec the rear hub starts to bind. The brakes aren’t the issue. I’ve replicated this with the caliper removed. I also don’t think the axle is the issue. The axle worked fine with my previous wheelset, and the axle is relatively new (less than 150 miles on it).

What are you torquing it to?

Since this isn’t a brake issue, this is the sign of an issue going on within the hub. I would remove the wheel, remove the end caps of the hub, and spin the bearings. If they notched, time for new ones. It’s also worth pulling the cassette and freehub body off and examining the condition of the grease/ pawls in the drive mechanism.

There’s probably a missing spacer in the hub
Edit: i9 has exploded diagrams for all their hubs. Open yours up and make sure all the parts are there

I’d go back to the seller, I would think this is a pre-existing issue.
You could also reach out to i9, their support is great to work with, but being 2nd owner I wouldn’t expect a warranty red carpet.
