I just recorded this video twice using my freaking laptop mic anyways here’s why you should never get into fixed gear ride pretty much ever since I started I’ve always found enjoyment in it the rawness of the ride you get when you ride a fixed gear is unparalleled to any type of biking in my opinion since you have no brakes and you’re really just stopping with your feet and you really can’t stop pedaling you feel everything on your bike and more of your muscles get activated while biking I guarantee you if you’re either an avid Road biker or mountain biker go out there and try a fixed gear the next day you will feeling sore in places you’ve never felt it’s insanely fun because there’s this little scary or stee factor I guess you get this because you are riding with literally no brakes and the only way to really control your bike is with your feet the great part about fixed gear riding also is how cheap it is the YouTube channel Global biking Network I believe did a video on how cheap a fixed gear is they ended up building one for around $50 and I to built one for around 4 the reason why they’re so cheap is because of the variety of Parts you can put on there you can pretty much put modern 2024 Parts on a bike that’s from 1980 you don’t have to worry about brake lines not fitting you don’t have to worry about your derailer working with your cassette you can pretty much use any type of axle that you want except through axle well unless your bike comes with a through axle I’ve put modern day Arrow wheels on a bike from you know probably the early 2000s the customizability is endless cuz there really is no constraints plus you don’t really feel too bad about messing with the bike such as welding on some new fitments to your frame or just completely destroying a wheel to make it more arrow for jokes also the culture and community of fixed gear riding is probably unparallel with any other type of community to put it simply fixed gear riding is basically like cool ass mountain bikers but on the road and like you guys just don’t care about competition so it just makes it even better even at sometimes I get free stuff from people who I don’t really know that too well so yeah it’s another big plus about fix gear riding now you may be wondering dude you’ve been talking the past couple of minutes about how good fix gear riding is what’s the bad part the bad part comes in when you actually get super ingrained within fixed gear culture yes fixed gear writing is very inexpensive however once you start seeing other people’s builds and then you think a 1990s Arrow full deep dish wheel is sick to put on your bike yeah um that’s that’s that’s where the problem starts to put it simply fixed gear heading gets bad because of the stupidity that you egg yourself on to do for example I’ve seen some bikes that were made in the ’90s get completely overhauled and all of a sudden they have a $2,000 road bike wheel set on them that’s the type of stupidity that I’m talking about it’s pretty much a snowball effect of pricing at first you see your fixed gear and think dude $20 for a new bottom bracket is nothing then you’re like eh might as well go with the $30 I mean it’s not much more and then you start going on Facebook Marketplace and you find these prior couple hundred group sets and you put on your bike for $50 and then it just keeps getting bigger and bigger from there then all of a sudden these Olympic track bike producers are having sales on their parts and you’re like damn bro two grand for a wheel set’s nothing what’s run that’s basically how it goes one of my biggest examples is when I built my $100 fully carbon wheel set I grabbed all these parts off of Facebook Marketplace but the bad part about it that I did not realize at first is that these are tubular rims not regular Clincher rims they’re tubular rims if you’re wondering what tubular rims are they’re basically like a big U shape on the rim with no bead on them you buy tubular tires which are easily anywhere from $4 to $60 a piece to put on these rims how you attach them to the rims is you grab some tubular tape which is $20 a piece at least and you tape it around there then you put your tire on there again this is a massive hidden cost of fixed gear riding you spend money on parts that you think are sick and cheap but then it comes and bites you in the butt later once you start actually dailying this fixed gear build that you’re are building that’s where the horrible part comes in big gear Riders are notorious for absolutely dest destroying or abusing their bike and if you’re buying road bike specific parts for a fixed GE most of the time they will not last because these road bike specific parts were just engineered to go forward go flat they’re not engineered to Bunny Hop or do a full cab on so definitely do not daily your fixed gear build daily probably like you know a commuter fixed gear the bad thing about these fixed gear builds is you’re not going to just replace that part that you break with the part that you already have now that the part is broken you’re going to replace it with a part that probably costs two times if not three times more because you want your bike to weigh less and fix gear Riders have a really hard time understanding that your bike is already light as it does not need to be even lighter my frame on my fixed gear build isn’t even fully carbon it’s not even Carbon on the handlebars and it weighs under 16 lbs if I got an actual carbon frame group set and handlebars I could probably get that to under 13 you basically get looped into roie Tendencies without being a roadie and without actually using your bike to what a ro uses it for so yeah PSA for all fix GE Riders who are currently watching this video your bike does does not need to be light and as you daily this fixed gear you’re going to realize oh I need to replace this part because it feels feels kind of off by 1 or 2 cm it’s just very odd and it ruins your life if you try to daily your fixed gear build because you’re just going to be throwing months of rent onto your bike now going back to my point about how certain road bike parts aren’t made to go in a fixed gear like I said road bike wheels are engineered to go forward and they’re not meant to Bunny Hop or other stuff like that cuz you will crack them most likely they’re also not made to really withstand torquing forces being directly applied to the hub forward and backward within quick time intervals this is where the track bike tax comes in track bike wheels are professionally made for fixed gears they’re made for professional fixed gears such as the ones used in the Olympics a lot of these Street fixed gear Riders do get their hands on them and they last a while I’ve seen them last 20 years and they look pretty much brand new such as these three spoked head rims and people charge for them they hold their value really well surprisingly I’ve seen some really really old three-spoked wheels go for a couple hundred bucks once you get into the track bike side of things for your fixed the you’re basic basically lawn gone and there’s nothing going back it’s going to be really hard for you to go back and you know recoup some of the money you lost but I bet your bike probably already cost 5 grand for a fixed gear which you’ll probably be able to sell for 200 bucks if Lucky I have not yet reached the actual track bike phase of fixed gear riding there maybe due to the fact that I don’t have the money to quite do it yet or I’m just somewhat financially responsible and this leads on to the stupidity of some of the builds I’ve seen I’ve seen some 80s frames like stuff you find in the dumpster they have these wheels that cost five grand you get a fully deep dish carbon wheel on the back then you get a three spoked head wheel on the front some of these builds are just plain stupid like I think they’re cool this is what most of these fixar writers get they get brainwashed into thinking they’re cool after being the scene for a few years to each his own I personally believe they are cool because I’ve probably been brainwashed but you spend so much money on a bike that does not need to have this much money spent on it you’re probably running a straight carbon steel frame from the 80s but then you just decide to put the most Arrow 2024 track bike wheels on your bike it surely some Insanity and then you get into trick part of it hopefully you do not destroy these wheels because you’ll be crying for the next 10 years but to put it simply I personally love fixed gear riding you get a big variety of people coming in and out of fixed gear riding it’s very fun to do but definitely stay away from it if you want to keep your pockets intact you might be going into it at first thinking dude that’ll never be me but I assure you 5 years down the line it will most likely be you if you watch the end of video make sure to like And subscribe I do Post YouTube shorts daily thank you guys for watching watching let me know down below if You’ ever tried fix your riding and if you have how much does your bike cost

I feel like this video could apply to ALL serious cycling hobbies. You start off with a $700 marketplace bike and next thing you know you're $8k deep into marginal gains territory
issue with every material hobbies unfortunately
The most literal dumb-a$$ thing I’ve ever heard of, well have fun…
Rip..
I remember my bike was a fixie hybrid which ive modded enough to become a litearl roadbike and its now cost 183 dollars and it actual cost was 43 dollars 💀
Bro has the expertise to deal with hydraulic road bike brakes but didn't notice the tubulars on the fixie? But fr stay away from fixed gear culture it's actually pretty stupid. You can ride the bikes though haha
Nice video. My only rule of thumb is, other than pedals and saddle, parts have to be NJS. Keeps it simple.
I've spent about 1k on my best fixed bike. Probably half that for the first cheap steel I built. No other way to go. I've built a gravel on an old Gary Fisher mtb frame which is killer, and a road on an old steel Bianchi frameset but my fixed bike is the go-to for anything. I've ridden group rides fixed and people think I'm crazy for doing metrics fixed but there is no better way to ride. Just look at accounts of the early Tour de France races and you will grown those balls. No other way.
Oof. My fixie cost $2500. Definitely spent too much.
You do have a brake. The front one! You control speed with your legs. Still need a front brake to brake! The fuck!?
Purchased my Bianchi Pista Dalmine in 2011 for $1000. Up until 2019 when it was stolen I maybe spent $200 on maintenance and trying out some drop bars. It was perfect from factory
Please don't banish me for asking this question…..isn't bad for the knees over time? I have a bunch of different bikes, and I find that as I am getting older I had to put the fixed gear bike away.
I ride a Mash Steel. Built if myself. Cost me around $3k in total. Been riding everyday for for 2 years straight on it
had to pause to go listen to runnin i came back
I feel so attacked by the thumb nail. Because I have THEE EXACT SAME THRONE BIKE, same design and color too and let me say I love it and mad people give me compliments soooo UR ON CRACK
$400 state bike.
An here i am getting flamed on my local ride for bringing a single speed to the fixed only ride after my track bike got stolen 😑
you just saved me months of rent, cheers dude!
i've been riding for a little over 4 months, I see what you mean i aswell am super tempted to get nice parts. so far I got my setup for 200 so I'm not far down the line but we'll see where this goes ^^
Running run run!
Hi I'm 62 years old now and I've been riding fixed gear since i was a teenager. I've never had breaks on any of my fixed gear bikes and so far no accidents knock wood lol. When i first started riding i got used to 63, 11 gearing and at my age i still ride the same gear ratio knees are a little whack but not bad for 62. Never give up riding fixed gear i know i never will.
Was a fixed gear rider for years in the city… After waaayyyy too many close calls I highly recommend having a front brake. If anybody calls you on it- F them. Going down a steep hill in the rain and having a car slam on the brakes in front of you and trying to skid stop and going ass over teakettle into their back bumper sucks. As does slamming into he back of a bus. Busses stop surprisingly fast in the rain. A no brakes fixie does not. BELIEVE THAT.
And you’re PROBABLY finding hitting the like button❤🚲🤪😵💫❤️🩹💡🚲Ha Ha I’m in
600 bucks
So… Not too dissimilar from Mountain biking in terms of long term costs
There's no rule that says you can't ride a fixed gear with a front brake. In fact, in some countries it's the law, like Japan. That's not stopping riders from riding fixed over there.
Ride a fixed gear with a front brake. Don’t listen to this nonsense.
Im a bike messenger and use a Shimano 600 crank(165mm) Miche cog (6$) and a kmc e1 e-bike chain that last 4000 km. Fixed gear part worn out fast, expansive and overrated
I rebuild my fixie with gears for bike packing. 4 speed freewheel from 1970 (Regina) and a simplex 1970’s derailleur , down tube shifter 😎
Rofl this video is very very true. My sis switched to tubular on accident too 😅
I got an old cervelo t1 from my BIL for free. Entire bike is probably $100 or so if you don’t count the stuff I’ve tried and didn’t keep or that I got a wrong size of initially 😅
This is rookie business. Buy one quality groupset and it will last you a lifetime. My Suntour Superbe Pro cranks and wheelset are bullet proof and have been with me across 4 framesets over 10 years of heavy riding with little maintenance. If you don't even ride a track bike, you have no business telling other people what to do. Invest in a good steel track bike and love it for the rest of your life.
I haven’t rode a fixed gear bike since I was a kid because as I got older and moved a few times the area we lived in had zero flat streets all hilly so i needed a multi gear bike that could handle uneven ground and a hard tail road bike wasn’t going to cut it
my fixie probably is just around $120 whole build, so yeah it works for me
I was a bike messenger around the time hipsters noticed messengers ride such thing. Still funny.
In the dark age of photography, before digital, before 35mm Kodak McPhotolab, the joke was "ruin you buddy with a gift of camera".
Seriously, I have never thought of dumping big cash on a fixed gear; I grew up with them, rode them for close to 35 years now, and alwsys thought them to be on utility side of the spectrum. You don't need bells and whistles; you just need essential stuff to work fine, and that's it.
And yes, many of the had those brake levers. Which, I ought to say, were largely redundant in real life – provided the rear brake contraption is well-mantained.
Fixie commuter veteran here and these are my
Observations:
1. Throw a brake on it
2. 700x30mm tires are the best speed/weather ready size for all seasons (I ride in Oregon rain)
3. Always keep it under 500$, Black Friday and Xmas youll see spanking deals (1 fixie got for 99$ complete and another time I got a track bike that was 700 on sale for 300$)
my fixed gear bike is only 410$
I don’t understand why people spend so much money on them. I been riding for 10 years on the same frame just got a new $200 rim set and 15 dollar bars. That’s just me though I think the amount of riding is always more important than what you ride
This video feels really ill-informed and contrived. I have a cheap, heavier, steel fixed gear as my daily driver and only bike. It's lasted me many years and costs me about $200-300 per year in maintenance and parts. Edit: It's my primary (only) vehicle and gets plenty of daily use.
I have the upgrade bug with any kind of bike I get my hands on, it really is a problem 😂. Love fixed riding, specially using old steel frames with unnecessary upgrade parts thrown in! Just be happy, folks, the bike is the true man's best friend ❤
I'm 15 and I've been a track cyclist since I was 8 and honestly track is so much more fun than road or cross
Sadly you cant put modern components on soviet bikes so easily, there's a whole community around it and a bike that was made using a frame from a soviet bike is called a crocodile
meh, non sense
Lmfao I’ve never bought a frame, pulled em out of the trash or got em from garage sales. Deep dish rims catch side winds so… no thanks. Steel frames don’t break. Idk 🤷♂️ I spent my money on a BB, cranks, chainring. Hubs I got for like $80 on like Amazon and they’ve been great hahahaha
