As a bike newbie looking for a commuter bike, I would really appreciate any insight as to whether this is a good choice at this price point.
Per the owner: “It is a 62″ steel frame. … It rides solid, the position and fit seems perfect for me. It has high-end alloy wheels that spin perfectly true (worth $250). The front cogs are 52 and 36 teeth and rear sprocket is 13 to 21 teeth. This is a very fast bike. FYI the rear sprocket is European mounting.”

Any functional bike that fits you is a steal for $100.
But just zooming into a bit closer if nothing else it needs a good cleaning.

$100 is a good deal – but make sure it is the right size and know that this bike needs some work. The front shifter cable looks loose enough where it may not work and I can’t tell about the rear shifter. It looks dirty so you will need to really clean the chain, cluster and shifters. Not sure how old the chain is but may need to be replaced. Check the brake pads and see if the brakes need to be tightened. Things like that. Might cost a few dollars more but if you do it it would be a good deal. From there, enjoy it. You will have a very good vintage bike.

I’d say it’s worth more. Especially if it’s comfy and you like it!

A used vintage rideable bike in your size is usually always worth $100. This one is somewhat of an investment. You can flip it doubling your money if you don’t like it. I’m 6’2” and like a racy 58cm. I think it will be fine for commuting.

My Fuji s-12 is very close to this model. 27 inch wheels on mine. Yours probably had 27’s and the upgrade to 700c was made. Notice the front brake pad is set at maximum drop to work on the 700c rim. Gearing looks a climber. This limits gear selection in the upper end, but no big deal on level runs. Commuting? no problem there if you get mud guards front and rear; rear-rack and lighting fr/rr. These Fuji’s are tough bikes and the ride is very forgiving; great for commuting/touring. My s-12 now has a front triple for hills so that I can stay on the bike riding steep roads around here. Your 36 is OK to keep for hills. You could easily swap a cluster with a 32T big sprocket. Whoa, you could go up a wall! $100 is off the chart cheap; done real good!
