You most likely had hairline fractures on the frame. Once it spreads, it’s game over. Hopefully you’re okay and didn’t get hurt. I’m also sorry for the loss. A bike you cherish is important and I understand how painful it is when it breaks. Hopefully you find another you enjoy.

When bike says “NO to Death Valley”

That was a Trek 520. I found it used in Oregon then rode it to Key West, Montreal, Thunder Bay, Denver, Yuma, Phoenix, Vegas, and then out here past Pahrump. The only touring bike which I could find to replace it with out there was a relic, a ten-speed Schwinn. I ended up riding that bike over to Tecopah then back through Pahrump and Vegas to [St.George](http://St.George), Utah where I found a Dawes Lightning. That bike got me to Minneapolis where I bought a Surly LHT. Still riding the Surly five years later.

Wow. Good thing it didn’t crack while you were out in the middle of nowhere.

It is a glorious death in the most fitting of journeys. Not very many bikes make it to Valhalla. Your steed was a true warrior.

I guess it’s dead, the valley killed it
That’s unfortunate. What are you gonna do now?
