Hi, I am new to mountain biking and have been checking local ads for used mountain bikes. I came across a Giant Anthem X29er 2 in what appears to be in excellent condition for $800. Would this be a good first mountain bike? I did some research on the bike and it looks like a 2011 model. Would I be able to upgrade/replace parts later on a bike this old? I don't know anything about mountain bikes so any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

    absolutely not

thats way too expensive for a 13 year old bike, and its almost a guarantee that the shock and fork is way way way past due on service, at that age probably could use a full rebuild.

seller couldn’t even be bothered to wash the bike before posting it for sale, that thing is going to need a complete disassembly and rebuild, and then you still have an out dated 13 year old bike.

  2. I would strongly recommend not getting that bike. IF you have a budget of $800 you can get a solid new hardtail or a really nice used hard tail.

Full suspension bikes age like milk. I’d have a hard time ever suggesting anyone gets a full suspension bike (besides maybe DH or gravity specific) older then 2017.

  3. The condition doesn’t matter. There have been revolutionary changes in geometry (how bikes fit and handle) in those particular intervening years. This is someone selling their horse and buggy a few years after the model T came out. Sure the horse is healthy, but that irrelevant now. It’s not their fault, just a bad time in history to hold onto a mountain bike.
