Just noticed this a few weeks ago. Wondering if I should get a new fork and do a replacement? It doesn’t wrap around, it’s cracked on the outer section only as of now. The bike is a 2007 trek Madone sl I believe, purchased 2nd hand
So the fork end is coming loose? Is there movement?

Do not frack around with forks. If that snaps going down a hill you are going otb and possibly breaking your neck. I’ve been OTB and that was not a fun ER trip.
Edit: OTB means over the bars.

Is it a scratch or a crack?

Pretty severe, like severely.

Replacement forks start around $100.

Forks are meant to be replaceable. It’s not the frame itself. Imagine if it failed while you were riding it

Stick a fork in it, it’s done.
Wait a minute….

Any crack on a fork is severe. Replace.

So here’s the thing, the actual dropout of the fork can be aluminum with a carbon blade bonded into it. This can sometimes show paint cracks because of the different material response/stiffness in that transition. But it’s really not worth risking it because you don’t know if the two are starting to separate which could also cause that crack.

I wouldn’t trust any damage like that on a for, if it breaks while you’re on it you’re basically screwed no matter how fast you’re going, unless you’re basically stationary.

There is no way I’d ever ride that fork.
