Got this bike for cheap, as I’m just getting into road cycling. I’m happy to stick with it for a while to learn how to repair my own bike and I like the retro look, but I’d like to replace the wheels and the old shimano 105 groupset with a new one (shifting is… very not smooth right now and I hate the old mechanism, and overall it’s a bit worn at this point). Is there one people would recommend? New recommended wheels? Sorry for the basic questions, I am brand new at this and I suppose I have to start somewhere.

That’s a nice frame to work with and upgrades wouldn’t be wasted. That said, new cables, tyres and cartridge style brake pads should go a long way.
New components – even a lower spec group like nine speed Shimano Sora will shift and brake better than the old 105. You can get the benefit of a wider gear range as well. Have a look what suits your budget and make sure you get the new brake calipers as well.
Wheels – I’d be looking for a used set of Mavic or Fulcrum quick release wheels, you can pick up some nice alloy rim ones pretty cheap as modern bikes use thru axles. Don’t listen to any naysayers, quick release wheels work fine.
Other things, a more modern bar shape might be more comfortable but your stem won’t fit the fatter bar clamp used these days.
