Absolutely not. And while you are at it, even give 650b rim brake wheels a shot, probably will take a 38c in 650b and use tektro r559. did this to a super old bike and could not be happier. Remember: your bike, your rules.

  2. Not at all, and with the downtube shifters it’d be super easy to convert. I’d just hang onto the drop bar components in case you want to convert back or sell it in the future.

Yes it would be. But it’s your bike. Then an ugly bike but yours.

  4. Do it. Playing around with different stem/bar combos is the most fun you can have it with a build

I would personally do a set of swept back riser bars with a bell and a rack with a basket on the front.

  6. I put flat bars on everything. Besides, its your bike, not like you’re fixing it up for someone that loves drops

  7. This is xbiking, nothing is blasphemous. Or everything is? I can’t remember.

If you convert to a straight or swept bar, you might also want to consider converting the downtube friction shifters to bar-end or bar-mounted ones. It’s a much longer reach to the existing shifters once you’re in a more upright position.

  9. I have a road bike that I took the dropbars off I made it flat and it’s sooo much fun to ride.

I am going to put Pelago outback or something with enough back sweep on 70’s Raleigh.

I’d sooner just use a hybrid because their front end geometry is better set up for flat bars. I think you’ll have to go pretty wide if you put flats on this bike for stability.

Im firmly on team drop bars, however recently i put some flat bars on a steel single speed and I do admit its a nice change

I thought the whole point of xbiking was the spirit of perpetual blasphemy?

  14. I have an almost identical bike that i made a single speed with flat bars and i LOVE it

  15. I had a similar, if you keep it chrome it’ll look fantastic. Parts from the same era, some cool nitto riser etc

Nah it’s your bike, do what you want. Conversion is super easy too if you are keeping the down tube shifters
