Hey guys, im about to leave for about 6 months on a tour. Im not going with any fancy garmin equipment, instead, just my trusty map apps. Im after something that my family can open, and just see my location on a map. Nothing crazy, literally just that would be enough. I've seen on garmin ones you can put pins on where you camped, add little messages etc. These would all be great bonuses.
Im planning on using map apps that I've previously used on tours, they didn't let me down but are also pretty simple and are strictly navigation. Mainly will be using MapOut for my offline maps, and then just Google Maps or cycle.travel when I need to look up something online.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Strava has a feature that does this though I’ve never used it. And the app generally works just fine in the background so this probably does as well
Shared location on Google maps works great
Polarsteps does exactly what you describe.
I still use MapOut as well. Has been a trusty app for a while now!
Do you have an iPhone? Can you just share your location with everyone? Whenever they want to see where you are they just click your name and there you are. Not sure about other phones, unfortunately.
I also have a paid subscription for Ride With GPS. I did a tour last year where I generated the route each morning. I’d say it was 94% awesome. This depends on other riders’ data and previous rides/routes to guide you, but you end up on some fun little roads.
