Based on the SN, it appears to have been Chicago made in 1979, but I don’t know what model it is. Looks like the bike might have originally been red? Can see red in addition to the rust.
It’s dept-store level, Chicago or not. Steel rims and 26x 1 3/8 wheels/ tires, ashtabula crank, you’ve got 40 lbs of steel there. Better than walking I suppose.
And no, the original color is black. That Red is just the primer.
The cable stops on the downtube and the extending tops of the seatstays look very much like the ones on my “electroforged” Schwinn Sprint. Are the welds nice and firm but kinda raggedy on the BB, smoothed out at the headtube rather like a fillet-braised bike of that era? Could be something they made for another badge, although that oval white badge on the front of the HT is classic Chitown Schwinn-g.

That’s an ‘80 Schwinn Continental. 27 x 1_1/4” tires. Fork is original. Google it and you’ll see. You can also see the original catalog picture.
