Found this crack on my old rock hopper when changing out my bars today. Anything I can do to mend it? Using this bike for bike packing, trail riding, and communing in SF.
Dude that sucks, maybe start hunting for a new/used frame if you need it for commuting.
I don’t know how many more hits that one has left in it, but the metal will likely just shear away throwing a sharp point and rolling the forks under the next time it gets really tested.

That frame is dead

New frame required. Don’t mess around with that.

I mean just depends on how much you like your face the way it is… it’s going to fail eventually. If you really love the frame you could weld it or get it welded. Or at the very least bend a piece of plate and JB weld it. Would maybe save a catastrophic failure 🤷♂️

Bad news, the frame is now a wall hanger.
Good news, excuse for a new bike day.

This could end very badly depending on what you do next.

If I were you, I’d hang that up on a wall and get a new frame.
Also never seen a headtube crack like that

I’ve seen plenty of folks ride with cracked frames
Granted, I worked trail patrol and those folks were injured

If you need it for commuting i would go to the hardware store and get a hose clamp to put around the crack. Mark the current edge of the crack so you can tell if it moves (i think you’ve done this already?)
Get a replacement asap. Check out the Bike Kitchen in the mission. Lots of parts for cheap and volunteers to help you. I’ve built 3 bikes there over the years, including my current city bike.

Look at it this way….keep riding it and you can mount your front teeth on the way next to the frame shortly

It’s toast. One of my good friends lost a whole bunch of teeth and really messed up his jaw when the front end of his frame failed along a crack like that.
