Hello,

Newbie here in need of some advice for my bikepacking adventure. I currently have two bikes to choose from: a Canyon Commuter 5 and a Trek Marlin 4. Neither is ideal for backpacking, but I'd like to know which one you think would be the better option.

Here is what I think about each bike:

  • Canyon Commuter 5: A commuter bike with a frame that might not be designed for rough terrains.
  • Trek Marlin 4: A mountain bike with MTB tires, potentially offering more space and better handling on rugged paths.

Neither bike comes with equipment like racks or other accessories. I am aware that the Trek Marlin might have more space for gear, but its MTB tires might not be the best for long distances on mixed surfaces. On the other hand, the Canyon Commuter 5 might have a more suitable frame for long rides but lacks the durability for rougher trails.

I'd love to hear your suggestions and any tips on setting up either bike for a bikepacking trip.

This is the trip I have in mind https://www.cicloviaparchicalabria.it/it/ciclovia/tracciato

Thanks in advance!

  1. Marlin 4, even has rack mounts which the Canyon doesn’t.

Put some fast XC tires and you’ll be rolling. Vittoria Mezcal is a usual go-to for decent mixed use while not compromising on the trail and still roll well on road. Wide range of choices although I wouldn’t go narrower than 2.25 if you expect mud and\or sand.
