The fastest racket sport at the Paralympics is Para badminton. We score points by hitting the shuttlecock over the net without return. Matches are the best of three games. The first to score 21 points wins a game. We can catch our opponents with clear shots. Drop shots. Lift shots. Or even a smash! We are grouped together for competition into six different sport classes. WH1 and WH2 athletes compete in wheelchairs. Athletes in SL3 and SL4 have a lower leg impairment. SU5 athletes have an upper limb impairment. And SH6 are players with short stature. Events include men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Wheelchair and SL3 classes play half-court for singles and full-court for doubles. In wheelchair matches, we don’t play the area near the net because we need to switch between hitting and manoeuvring on the court. Our wheelchairs have extra wheels for balance or even a low backrest so we can gain extra range to make clear shots. All other athletes play full court. And move with lightning-speed footwork and hits. Watch the dynamic action at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
