As the title implies, my friend and I were changing out his cassette and as I was in the process of the first few gears, I noticed some unusual metal shards around the splines. Once I completely removed his cassette, it had become pretty darn evident that he had caused some damage to his hub. We didn’t noticed any play in the cassette before but this is probably the first time it’s been removed since 2018. Not the good news he was looking for, but as we all know, when it rains, it pours.
Has anyone else seen this type of damage before? My friend is a bigger guy and definitely puts some serious power through his drive train. We were both figuring that the hub needs to be completely replaced but if anyone else has some ideas, definitely open!

I’d say that’s pretty typical. Maybe a little deeper than normal, but typical.
That is very common in freehub splines, especially in the aluminum ones, I would say the vast majority of hg comparable freehubs have similar damage. It’s not an issue, just make sure the lock ring is good and tight
You put the last ring on in the wrong way and then the locking forced it into the aluminum.
