The only way we are going to get more people to exercise daily is by making it part of how they get around. It’s easy to skip going to the gym or forget to ride your bike for recreation. It’s harder to forget to bike to work, stores, restaurants, etc

Nothing?
I’ve done my cardio at the gym when the weather is perfectly fine outside because I like to use the weights and it saves time doing it all in one place in the same hour. Different days I do different things. No need to judge people for trying be/get fit.

I get it especially in the US where even the most bike friendly areas are still pretty risky partly because people do a few turns in a parking lot and get a license and partly because awful design.
Saving tons of money just isn’t worth risking your life to most people.

I think it’s rude to stare at people exercising.
In all seriousness, I assume this picture is intended to criticize people using stationary bikes at a gym instead of biking outside? In which case I think it’s narrow minded. People have diverse needs, preferences, and goals. There’s all sorts of reasons someone might choose a stationary bike: weather, safety, terrain, don’t own a bike, don’t want to figure out a route, just warming up for other exercise, etc etc etc.

Interestingly, I own a bicycle and a trainer. I prefer to ride the bike whenever the weather allows. The trainer is nice when itβs 100+ F (like it has been almost all summer this year) or we are under a severe weather watch. Florida heat and lightning are no joke!

When I broke my wrist I used a trainer. For me? It was the worst two months on a bike as I tried to build back endurance and stamina. Definitely not the same, but just being able to feel the bike did help with my mental health, so I was glad for that option.

I understand what the image is trying to say, I myself don’t like to do any stationary cycling but sometimes I want to exercise without having to worry about traffic.

Not everyone the room or money to own a bike appropriate for where they can ride.
Stationary cycling lets you zone out, watch TV, listen to podcasts, read a book, hang out with friends, etc etc… regardless of weather and traffic and path conditions.

That using a bike to go to the gym is a normal thing to do.

I’m just really glad that a gym has accessible biking. If you’re in the middle of a city, a structured workout is often more difficult if you are low on time since you’ll have to contend with traffic signals and the like stopping your workout. So if you want a quick workout at a specific pace, riding your bike to the gym and going on a trainer might make sense.

I don’t have a gym membership but I do have a spin bike at home (and an assault bike). I commute to work 90% of the time. I own 7 bikes besides the spin/assault bike. Sometimes I just want to watch TV while I bike. Sometimes it’s too hot. Sometimes it’s too cold (temps where I live can be -30 in winter and 100 and humid in the summer). Sometimes I just don’t feel like biking outside for no reason at all. There’s lots of reasons people exercise indoors. No need to tear anyone down for getting exercise.

I do both. But a real bike is just so much more fun.

Lol nothing gets under my skin like these “deep” single-cell comics. Tons of reasons a person might bike at a gym and still own a bike for commuting or leisure.

I’m not shaming people for how they choose to enjoy their physical activity. What does strike me, though, is that there are very few spaces the general population would feel safe exercising outdoors like this, but we don’t seem to care, collectvgely.
