  1. Looks Like a broken shifter. Would have been mounted on the handlebar to change gears but it’s broken. Probably beyond repair.
The rear derailleur on that bike – in addition to being rusty and poorly maintained – also appears to be broken as well as improperly mounted. Even if the shifter (the part you’re asking about) were in working order, I don’t think the gears would change.
Lots of work to do here, but the parts you need are common and not too expensive. Use this as a learning experience, watch some YouTube vids on rear derailleur replacement on mountain bikes and enjoy your new project!

EDIT: Upon closer examination, it’s all rear derailleur. Not a shifter. Your transmission is dead, but a new one won’t cost much. My local charity shop has boxes of them for 2 Euros and even a new one is pretty affordable. Another bit of good news is that it might be the case that your shifters are still in working order!

  2. That’s a piece of the rear derailleur. I’m guessing you’ll need to replace the entire thing. It doesn’t look repairable to me.

  3. This is a good time for an upgrade. It won’t be cheap, but you can salvage this bike and make it work better than ever. Get an 8 or 9 speed shifter, freewheel, derailleur and chain. They’ll be more durable and perform better.

  4. Bro you’re missing parts (one pulley completely missing) and the chain is routed wrong and the bottom pulley is not original. someone did some crazy Frankenstein custom work I’m kind of impressed it might actually sort of work somehow like a derailleur from the 40s.

As a former bike mechanic I am at a loss for how this is shifting. It’s on the “tensioned” end of the cassette though which is very very strange.

Nah fuck that, these derailleurs are cheap, then you’ll need a derailleur cable and maybe a 7 speed quick link, but not if you remove the chain correctly. Can do it yourself fairly easily

  7. UPDATE:
I will post a video of it shifting gears later today. I’m hungry and will eat dinner now. These comments are hilarious and thanks to whoever said this belongs to the r/bicycle hall of fame 🙏
