My gearshift started to shed plastic the other day like a peeling sunburn and now it won't shift at all. The other gearshift stopped working as well, but I haven't torn into it. Do I need a new grip? Or can I Jerry rig it to work again?

I have never liked nor trusted gripshift. It looks like you’re completely hosed, but maybe someone will come along and offer hope.
3×7?

Or 3×8?

Both sets are available on amazon for less than $20. Way better than the grip shifts, I replaced my 3×7 set on my trek and thay are 1000x better. Shifts great now, precise and easy.
That gripshift is toast. Not to worry though, cheap to replace, just get one off Amazon that matches your gearing. Or think about swapping out to lever shifters, the indexing is the same.
You’ll need a new shifter, but that is a cheap fix, and relatively easy, requiring few specialized tools.
Bro you gripped the shift out of that thing
I just donated a set of those to a co op. I personally hate grip shift but you can replace them relatively cheaply.
It’s a great opportunity to get rid of those wretched gripshifters and get some nice triggers!
I absolutely hate grip shifters. Even good ones.
Ditch the mechs front and rear and convert to SS.
Problem. SOLVED!!!
Grab you some [sunrace friction thumbies](https://www.ebay.com/itm/224487667033?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=JideDEb6QnK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=nhxazl-ptcu&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) and you’ll no longer be hosed
