In case the chain slides off the largest/lowest gear to hopefully keep your spokes from getting destroyed. Mandated include if you buy from department stores.
The idea is to protect the spokes in case the chain drops behind the sprocket. That shouldn’t happen though if the derailleur is properly adjusted.
It’s for ripping off
