I’m sure this is asked a lot…and I’ve looked through this subreddit already, but haven’t found anything that I could extract that could be used for my situation.

I’m looking to spend roughly $1000CAD (or less) on a medium frame DH bike, I’ve got some used options such as:

~ all prices CAD

Specialized (unknown) – $1000
Specialized Enduro – $780
Santa Cruz Nomad C – $1000
Aim EX Medium Cube Hardtail – $900
2022 Sombrio Shovel Hardtail – $850

Previously, I was only looking for FS as that was the advice I had received last season using a Hardtail for the summer in BC. (This would also be my first FS, I’ve never ridden one otherwise)

The Hardtail I had was certainly not built for DH and I broke the rear axle a couple times and bent the rear rim.
Cannondale XCR w/ 3” tires. This was all riding lift access downhill roughly 1-2 times per week over the course of 2 months.

After doing some more research and reading through this subreddit, it seems the general opinion is to purchase a Hardtail at the price range of $700 – $1000 rather than a FS for the same.

My concerns are as follows:

  1. This is opposite to the advice I had previously received.

  2. The Hardtails available to purchase have a shock travel of 100mm whereas most FS are closer to 120mm – 140mm, is that enough of a difference in the front suspension to justify a FS or even upgrading the Hardtail?

  3. I will be purchasing used either way,
as per this subreddit, new FS should not be purchased for less than $2k and new hardtails should not be purchased for less than $1k. How much does this generally coincide with the used market?

  4. The general advice of this subreddit to purchase a Hardtail typically related to situations where the rider was not only riding lift access DH.

Are any of the bikes listed above an alright starting point? The hardtail’s have the newer geometry whereas for the FS’s it’s a mix of older and some more modern geometry although not quite new ( > 2018 it seems )

  1. Don’t buy an older spec bike unless you’re really sure of what you’re doing. Do you really want a downhill bike or are you (no offense) confusing downhill with trail and enduro bikes which might be more what you are looking for?

Hardtails w/ 100mm travel are also going to break, they are not trail/enduro hardtails they are more city bikes or at best XC bikes.

Hardtails with 140-150mm of travel are more likely going to also be built for what you want to do on them.

Not trying to be rude but it seems you aren’t super familiar with the categories of bikes out there and with the changes to geometry the past couple years. You might get a lot of benefit out of a couple of evenings watching youtube videos about the differences between xc, trail, enduro, and dh bikes. Also about modern geometry vs what bikes were like 10 years ago.

For the DH you need DH or at least enduro bike. This will filter your choice and exclude HT with 100 mm travel.
