This is a 87? Murray I've had for years. I love the colors and the styling. I hate the derailers (can't get them tuned), I hate the shifters, and I hate the handlebar, and the tires are shot.
I've already purchased new tires and a new handlebar (converting it to flat riser). How much work/money would it take to convert it to a freewheel single-speed?
I don't want to give up, I know it's worthless, but I'm falling for a gambler's fallacy here…
Any advice would be appreciated!

there are single speed conversion kits for like 20 dollars.
you might be able to use the same crank if it fits a single speed chain ring, or just leave the extra chain rings in place and don’t bother taking them off. again 10 to 20 dollars if you get a new chain ring.
probably should get a new chain, your old chain is likely worn enough that it will skip on fresh new gears. cheaper chains are like 10 dollars.
you’ll probably need new brake levers to fit the new bars. luckily flat bar brake levers are very cheap. 10 to 15 dollars.
brake cables probably will need change if you use new levers, it’s very difficult to reuse old cable because the ends get frayed and you’ll need to adjust the length to the new bar positions. a few dollars for just the cables, 10 to 15 if you buy the housing kit yourself.
it’s not much but i’d at go ask and get a quote from your local bike shop. they’ll charge you labor and some mark ups, but the material might be cheaper from their suppliers in bulk ( brake cables and such ).
