I’m going on a pretty long tour through Colorado this summer, ~1400mi across 24 days. I’ve had my eye on a used topstone 4 for $850 from Facebook marketplace. I took it on a test ride and it is a solid bike, only has ~100mi on it.

The devil on my shoulder is telling me to buy a new canyon grizl 7 for $2,000. I love love love the looks and aesthetic of the grizl, but I don’t know if I love it enough to pay well over double the price of the topstone. It’s also of course a mechanical upgrade with hydraulic brakes, grx drivetrain, 2x gears, etc. I feel like I will always be looking for my next upgrade if I get the topstone, whereas I’m sure I would own the grizl for at least a decade.

I’m going to be living with whatever bike I buy for 3 weeks. If I buy the topstone, I might regret not splurging, but if I do buy the grizl I might constantly be thinking about how much I could’ve saved. If I buy the topstone, I can also invest in better camping equipment, bags, etc. What would you do? Thanks in advance.

I personally think the better components are worth it. Especially if you’re going to ride for 3 weeks straight.

Edit: better components on the grizl

+1 for new bike because the frame has a seven year warranty. Used bike you may be starting over if you get a crack.

I always get bemused when people declare a bicycle’s mileage to be such-and-such. You have absolutely no way of knowing how many miles someone else’s bike has done. Nor does it really matter anyway.

Also buy the Grizl. You’ll never regret spending the money but you will regret skimping and having to deal with a lesser bike.
