I was originally going to get a lot more riding in before posting anything additional on these shoes but after five hours of horse-tier riding I think I’ve seen enough.
If you’re going brakeless I would probably suggest another shoe. I estimate I only did about 50 or so feet worth of braking and this is what it looks like. At this rate, I’ll have wet socks by Monday.
The shoes grip pedal well enough and are more comfortable than the pita pocket etnies I was wearing prior. If you wear a wide shoe, expect to have a few miles of break in before you get really comfortable.
Overall they’re not bad shoes. Definitely worth $30, and had we had these at Walmart as kids we would have been very grateful. If you’re on a budget like me I would suggest getting them with the expectation that they will wear out quickly with sustained riding. Another poverty alternative I like is scouring Ross’ shoe section where you can find similarly priced shoes from your main skate shoe companies.

obviously brakeless has been around for over 20 years and it’s here to stay, but shoes will always end up like this, they’re not designed to be a braking surface, and if they were they’d be inflexible solid soles.
