Families, cyclists, and environmental protection advocates participate in the Pedal for People and Planet in UP Diliman Quezon City, Philippines on May 19, 2024.
The event, organized by the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development, in coordination with the University of the Philippines, the Quezon City Government and various civil society organizations, is a means to “signify their support for building renewable energy systems to replace fossil fuel energy to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of families, communities, and the planet.”
APMDD Coordinator Lidy Nacpil said they “organized this event as a fun and meaningful way for families to participate in promoting the transition to 100% renewable energy, a vital part of the solution to the #climatecrisis and the harmful pollution from #fossilfuels.”
The bike action was timed during the same week as the International Day of Families and as environmental groups are also intensifying their calls for climate action in line with the celebration of #WorldEnvironmentDay on June 5 and the UN #ClimateChange Conference to be held in Bonn, #Germany this June 2024.
APMDD said other bike rides were organized in Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
