This bike was good for its day but it’s woefully out of date.

That slack as all fuck seat tube angle will make steep climbs a nightmare and the steep head tube will make descents on modern trails sketchy as hell. The pivots and shocks likely haven’t been serviced in decades (if the shock/fork still holds air, it won’t for long as the seals are probably rotting). This thing is a rolling mass of dead standards, so finding quality parts replacements would basically be impossible unless you scour the used market, but like I said; this is old school geometry that everyone’s moved past, so unless you’re a retro loyalist looking for a project (that would likely require constant maintenance) to ultimately ride nothing spicier than flowy blue line trails I’d avoid it.

you’d be better served with a dropper equipped, modern hardtail

    No, no it is not.

also, the friend selling this to you for 300 notes is not a friend.

edit. I’ll expand on this. That bike is roughly 16 years old which means it has geometry from an era long gone. Mountain bikes have come on a long way since then and the modern bikes are much nicer to ride off road. The frames are longer which makes them more stable for starters, that’s because a longer reach also puts you more central on the bike.

You can easily pick up a used bike from the past four years for similar money, but it will likely ride loads better.

  3. This is ancient. I’d not spend more than 50 on this bike, but only if the tyres are brand new.
300 is way WAY overpriced for this.

  4. Your “friend” should just be giving this to you. Beyond obsolete, both components and frame geometry which drastically affects how a bike handles. Even “free” if it needs ANY work, like new tires, or a simple tune up, youd be better off saving your money and putting it toward a modern hardtail.

  5. Wow, that is such an old configuration. Ancient. You won’t be able to get any replacement parts. Get a different bike.

Why does it say 1988? I think mountain bikes in 1988 just had the curved chromoly forks, but I’ve been wrong before.
