I am currently looking for a new bike. I have my eyes on the Tumbleweed Prospector and surly Ogre.
Both are great bikes. I guess the Prospector is more for bikepacking and the ogre for biketouring?
Currently I have an old hardtail (Cube attention SL 29×2.25) which I used in Norway (Kirstiansand to Bergen at the coast then with the train to flam and then Rallervegen to Oslo) and Sardinia (Trans Sardinia ). On those trips I figured that I prefer off-road/smallraod bikepacking trips. This bike is also my commuter bike.
For the next one and a half year I am doing an Mechatronics Technician Training, meanwhile I want to do some bike packing trips but afterwards I am considering a world tour.
I would go with 29rims since I am quite tall (193cm/6.33feet) and I am currently running 29ers which I really enjoy. Or should I go with 27.5 with wider tires since they have the same/similar diameter compared to 29ers.
Also I would like to go for a gearbox (Rohloff/Pinion) since it is low maintenance. I've already testet a Rohloff which fealt really nice.
The Prospector would be superior for bikepacking to the Ogre since it can fit 29×2.8 tieres and if I want to tour for a longer time I could fit some 29×2.2?
Would tho Ogre be good for bikepacking on rougher trails with 29×2.5? Should I go with derailor test-drive it an then for the Rohloff or should I go directly for the Rohloff.
I don't care if one bike is more expensive then the other since I would keep it for a long time if I enjoy it.
TLDR:
Which bike would you chose for bike packing and touring (wider tires or smaller tires)? Tumbleweed Prospector or surly Ogre? And why? Do you have any other bike recommendations?
Edit:
I would prefer a steel frame and flat bars.

Check out the Salsa Fargo TI. It has removable dropout for gearbox too. A lot lighter than the Prospector and also comes in Titanium frameset. If I could afford it, I’d buy this for my dream bike build.
I would go for a Sonder Broken Road Ti with Pinion. but I already have a Broken Road with SLX and love it so am a bit biased!
