  1. wipe the rust off with a rag and dont be shy, the important wax is inside the chain, there is no danger of ruining your wax. then apply your drip wax.

    – What consistency was the wax when you took the chain out of the pot?

  3. I concur this is normal. Wax is the shit, especially for mountain biking. That black hand you get when you touch the chain with oil is protecting it from rust, but you only need lube in the rollers so if you don’t mind it don’t matter.

    I would assume the chain wasn’t dried properly before you applied the wax somewhat “sealing” the water which then caused rust. Or there was too little wax and exposed areas started rusting. I would try deep cleaning the chain and reapplying the wax more generously
