hi everyone welcome to nice cycling 11 some positive reinforcement the space isn’t sharable should give way to the more vulnerable [Music] perfect the next few Clips are from a regular contributor and in this first one he deals with nicely the poorly parked trees the lack of a signal from the driver of this old car is easily dealt with if you’re not sure where they’re going just hold back this vehicle may not even have indicators and if you’ve got steering to do you need to prioritize that other than arm signals then just a little further up my viewer spots someone going to use a zebra crossing my viewer’s got this skill in abundance which is lost on many Road users if you slow down earlier you’ll keep more speed going through another good early spot of a pedestrian wishing to cross the road this was important here cuz you don’t want this lady to rush which was also rubber stamped by where my viewer held back a simple Point here when to take a drink have a look at risk at the moment it’s really low but watch what happens as soon as my viewer spots The Pedestrian hello on your right more control and both hands are required on handlebars a nice verbal warning also this can be sketchy in a car but it’s even more risky when you doing not on a pedal bike it requires good forward planning and great awareness of your surroundings again slowing early is important if you react and jump on the brakes late it’s not going to be safe I also like the left arm signal at this point it acts as a good deterrent to stop people potentially coming down the inside nice work here Horse and Rider incoming what would you do here hello y all right it’s always a good idea to try and communicate with the rider and that’s important from both perspectives here’s another situation where communication is very important and I’m not just talking about dealing with The Pedestrian watch how quickly my viewer reads what the van driver is telling them nice Road use all around in this clip pleasing to see may I can make it and another nice hand up to say thanks no problem about making progress when you can as long as you’ve always got that ability to to slow down and giveway when you need to it’s always a good idea to avoid the horse poo and some nice control of a difficult downhill section good work all around the next few Clips are from a viewer across the Atlantic looking after pedestrians great anticipation there also and here with the phone zombie thanks for sending in an obvious clip this one but why would you do anything different terrible from the scooter rider this incident reminds me quite a lot of the recent fir truck video that I analyzed my viewer sus is out early that they’re possibly in the blind spot of the Lorry and you can see them slowing down but next time slow a little bit earlier and a little bit more you did keep yourself safe and we easily able to stop but by slowing a little earlier honestly I think the lry driver may have seen you and held back for you nice cycling is plain and simply keeping yourself safe most of the time my viewer does a brilliant job here they shouldn’t have to but unfortunately it’s reality my view is not even in a blind spot here this white forward just pulls out anyway nice job you’re still riding this is a good idea to pull over into a little passing spot and allow faster vehicles to overtake this Lorry driver is more likely to be patient the next time helping flow where possible does not mean you’re giving in to the car Centric population and believe it or not this is what some cyclists actually think I thought that was particularly good timing with this uphill section [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome remember it’s nice to be nice some more good awareness and appreciation of people following behind there’s times to be positive and there’s times to submit with an emergency service vehicle this was perfect just to pull over and stop I also think it was a good decision to wait until until the remaining cars are cleared before starting off again and to finish today’s episode we’ve got some good examples of how to deal with meeting traffic situations although the minib buus driver is trying to accommodate flow driving on a pavement is not the correct answer here some cyclists may think that they can fit through still staying on their side of the road which is technically correct but it’s not always the best option holding back at this space allowed the vehicle uphill to keep momentum although they were going a little fast in my opinion the oncoming car has already committed and there’s no room for them to pull in better off holding back and this is something very few Road users do well enough look into the exit road before you turn my viewers virtually stopped so the best thing to do is for them to wait and allow the other vehicle to finish although my viewer should technically have priority I’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who sends in these brilliant Clips keep safe out there I’ll see you soon

They did manage the pedestrians well by cycling wide in case they hadn't seen… But why no sound of the bell. It can help a lot of people cross without looking based on their hearing (i.e. they hear no cars) … Some people remove the bells they get on their bikes because they think they are uncool. They are a virtual safety tool… Your first cyclist had really good skills but it's a mystery as to why there was no bell. It would have helped passing pedestrians on the shared cycle / walking path
as a cyclist, this warms my heart. better arriving a minute later than not at all, I reckon. Not sure Mike or Jeremy agree though.
if you don't go out of your way to make a situation awkward, can you even call yourself a proper cyclist?
"it's best to avoid the horse poo"
Which is why I rarely read the comments 🙂
🚲👍
Those were some long arms.
Personally, I wouldn't include the first clip in a compilation of nice cycling, when the cyclist is breaking the law by riding on a footway which isn't shared.
I really wouldn't want some big vehicle like that tractor overtaking me at a stupid time.
I'd much rather pull in like I often do.
the first cycist is almost too nice!
Thank you for including my clip at 5:35, the driver of the white Ford “Focus” didn’t even look in my direction. Even though I had a flashing light and was wearing a high visibility jacket at the time, it still didn’t catch the drivers attention.
Trucks are not allowed to drag mud onto the road and you have to pick dog poo up. Why is it ok for horse riders to leave horse poo in the road where it is a danger to cyclists and motorcyclists?
The footage of that Fiesta entering the roundabout should be sent to the police. Completely unacceptable driving.
Fuck cars
Dear cycling twitter: this is what good cycling looks like. Reducing risk and preventing any issues in the first place. When people criticise a cyclist for putting themselves in a dangerous situation when another road user does something poor, it's not "victim blaming". It's encouragement to do better and to keep yourself safe, like what is shown in these examples. Most of the situations you get outraged about would be far less of an issue if you followed this mentality.
Poorly parked trees lol, they should get a ticket!!!
Some good humans demonstrating how do do cycling safetly and courtiously – lovely!
The importance of not holding up tractors is huge, because people will often get impatient with tractors, and they will be determined to get past. Seen them overtaking tractors indicating to go right, know someone who had 2 people attempt to overtake as he was turning right. It was a downhill slope so how they missed the beacons, the indicator and the slowing pace on approach to the ONLY right turn within more than 500 metres.
~7:30 – I'd have done the same in a car if I thought the ambulance could and would use the Exemption.
On narrow lanes, I'll never pass a horse, regardless of whether the rider has invited me to go by. Even oncoming horses, i pull up and let them pass me. When you've nearly had one jump on you, it makes the underpants a little browner!
It's happened to me three times. Every time I was approaching face to face, I stopped, then continued at the riders request. All approaching horses must pass me now.
Ash's "How to be a better human" series continues. Well done to every cyclist in the footage!
This is what I aspire to as a cyclist.
Stopping to let faster vehicles pass just a mindset thing. If you struggle to get onto this mindset, just think of it as interval training. 😉
At 2:43, notice how he also communicated with the horse by taking his sunglasses off. Horses are more likely to recognise people when they can see their face clearly I'd imagine.
"Poorly parked trees"… 🤣 I'm sure someone must have written that on an insurance claim form!
Nice 👍
Very nice to see that there are really good cyclists. Giving way does not mean that you are giving in.
I recommend that any road user takes a few motorcycle lessons. You're taught to drive defensively and, most importantly from a cyclist's point of view, the 'lifesaver' – that glance to your nearside just to make sure there's nothing coming up that you haven't seen ? And why don't cyclists have bells ? People can't always pick out a voice from behind especially if it's a busy environment. Runners seem to think that you can hear them from behind and get a bit annoyed if you're walking a dog, also not expecting them, that snaps at them. A bit of forethought and consideration would help everybody. PS I've been a runner, a cyclist, a motorcyclist, a car and lorry driver, and a dog owner, so I've got a handle on how most reasonable road users think.
How nice to see a proper cyclist simply doing his thing, and doing it exceptionally well. A nice antidote to the Cycling Mikeys and Jeremy Vines from whom we hear far, far too much.
The cryo-lorry quite possibly uses that entrance regularly, knows the layout and should be more aware of his/her blind spot when turning across a live lane. The submitter is doing a good job of self-preservation, but the truck could do a lot better by pausing to check the cycle lane is clear before completing the turn.
5:30 in. A small additional point is that we cyclists should not be using the roundabout in that way. We are supposed to stick to the outside of the outside lane. Mainly because of the difficulty in being spotted when drivers are having to pay extra attention to all of their surroundings already. So the culyclist had failed to look after themselves simply by being that far into the roundabout
Great to see care and consideration on mostly both parts 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻..Cyclists and vehicles can get along🙏🏻
Some great clips here. Also really pleasing to see a number from around my village in Devon, where single file is what we do best.
Excellent examples of considerate cyclists. The roads are there for all to use and a little more consideration from all road users make driving easier for all.
0:30 lol
They need to turn over a new leaf!
Is following traffic going to expect a cyclist to "stop" short of zebra crossings and junctions, 1:05 and 1:20? I note the cammer does not give a left signal at 1:29. 1:32, anyone know at this point if there is a parked car about to move forward? Risk Low, really? 2:56, just as well there was nothing on coming at speed.
As a cyclist, you do not have to pull over for motorists (with the exception of emergency vehicles). You are going somewhere, just like the motorists.
Ashley, three more horse related tips:
1 – if a horse is approaching from the opposite direction and you have a flashing front light on your bike, cover it until you have passed; the flashing light can spook some horses
2 – If you approach a horse & rider from behind, call out clearly to announce your approach – horses respond better to a human voice than they will a bell or a rider appearing 'out of nowhere'
3 – if you see horse poo in the road and it is still steaming (it does!) yet you have not yet passed a horse, the likelihood is that the horse will be in the road ahead of you just out of sight, perhaps round a bend.
I don't understand your comments in the intro. If it isn't shared space, then the cyclist should have been in the road. Cyclist FAIL
and the old car has got indicators, you can clearly see them level with the brake lights. Driver FAIL
Can you send a link of this video to Jeremy Vine. He seems to spend his life aggresively looking for problems when , like the guys on this video, he could easily avoid them.
