I bought a Specialized Diverge E5 in January to prepare and ride in the Pan Mass Challenge in August. The bike was tuned up this past weekend (free tune ups within the first year of purchase) and I went for the first ride since picking it up today.

After 28 miles of mostly paved road, I was climbing a very short punchy dirt road when all of a sudden my rear wheel stoped spinning and I skidded to a standstill. Below is what happened to my derailleur.

My best bet is that the gears weren't indexed appropriately and when switching to the lowest gear, while on the biggest chainring. This caused the the chain to slip off the cassette and wedge into my spokes and twisting everything.

I'm taking my bike back to the shop it was purchased and serviced at tomorrow. In the communities opinion, am I on the hook for this fix or should the shop take care of this issue?

Thank you in advance!

Broken rear derailleur hanger. Happens when the rear derailleur gets accidentally bashed against something a few times. Rear derailleur hanger weakens with each hit and eventually breaks. It is a sacrificial piece designed to break when the rear derailleur gets hit, so as not to damage the frame.

Not covered by warranty. It is incumbent on the bike owner to avoid accidentally hitting the rear derailleur on things.

  2. There is a possibility of an incorrectly set limit screw to cause this.

Please take this back to your LBS ASAP (if it’s going to be more than a day I would email over the photos now and start the conversation) and see what they say.

If you can get a photo on an angle of the limit screws (you should see two silver screws on the body of the RD near the shift cable termination).

If the photo angle can show the height of how far the screws are set it will help the Internet confirm the potential cause of failure.

  3. I think you could have a case for the Bike store messing something up since you got it serviced recently but I wouldn’t completely bet on it.
