Hi everyone! I've been itching to get back to the trails all of a sudden after many years but in a dilemma now…

Should I get an older bike with higher end spec? Or should I get a newer bike that's lower spec. Both are used bikes! And for the same price.

Was looking between a 2015 santa cruz bronson c versus a ~2022 canyon strive AL

Santa cruz is used but frame wise is claimed to be OK and no cracks!

  1. New lower spec. It also looks like the spec difference is really just xt vs deore. The incremental generational improvements of both families would put modern deore at the same performance, if not better, than old xt

without actually looking at the geometry for both those frames, 2015 was around when geometries started getting “better” (longer lower slacker) but the steep seat tube angle hadn’t fully caught on yet.

Equivalency wise, the Santa Cruz is basically bottom of the barrel spec now and used.

Man those are pretty different bikes. Santa Cruz will climb better but it’s like a decade old. I had a tall boy that looked very similar. Don’t buy a ten year old carbon bike man.

If you really want a enduro style/downhill rig and something you’re not biking up hill a ton on, then it would definitely be the better option. Keep shopping around for a true trail bike imo.
