Couldn't shift gears because this is broken. Wasn't sure what's broken, because I think my Hub Gear Indicator Chain is still in tact.

Bought this from REI less than 3 months ago. I wonder if I can get them to fix it at no cost, or if I should buy the parts and try to fix it myself.

Doesn’t appear to be broken. The piece coming out of your hub should screw into the other piece you’re holding. You will have to adjust how much you screw it in to achieve the right level of tension to shift gears

  2. It’s not broken it needs screwing together. the bit coming out of the wheel hub fits inside the bit by your thumb. On youtube a company called Brilliant Bikes have a video of how to adjust Stermy Archer gears. It looks like you have lost the locking nut. Sounds like you got sorted. Tip for the future, should it happen again: Pull on the gear cable slightly to create tension and shift into your highest gear. This will make it a bit easier to attach.

Its not broken but it is incomplete, you are missing the secure nut so now it will quickly unscrew itself again i would go by your local bike store and ask for a new Sturmey Archer indicator chain II that is size 2 or 2 stripes
