I made a post on my updated 2013 boardman cx team two years ago. Well here we are two years later with more money thrown at an entry level 10yr old bike. Old Post embedded below.
I’m a massive fan of getting the best out of older or slightly overlooked things. I scoured ebay and ali express for good deals on parts. In reality ive probably thrown good money after bad but I just dont want to get a new frameset yet. Bearing that in mind all the upgrades i have done are with the idea of getting a lighter carbon frameset sometime in the future, ha!
Since my last post 2yrs ago the biggest changes have been the following.
* 1x 11 speed GRX 810, 600 mix groupset with SLX direct mount hydraulic brakes (i did try Ltwoo but wasnt a fan)
* praxis works alba? direct mount crank (172.5mm) for a better chain line
* Elite wheels 38mm deep, 28mm internal width. Thru axle to QR adapters
* Canyon H11 integrated cockpit (41×100)
In terms of ride quality I just love it, its like an a pair of old leather boots. The best upgrade was the wheels imho, the shape it gives to the 38mm GKs is just perfect. My favourite upgrade was getting the canyon h11 cockpit to work, which included many hours of sanding down an aero spacer to get the perfect fit!
The bike is still a bit hench at around 9.8kg without pedals.
MTFUandPedal on
That’s a ’14 model year.
They were on a 2 year model cycle then, the ’12 was identical barring the colour scheme.
Mines the ’12 in grey. Bought it new in Nov 2013 shortly after the Silver one was released and I got a truly ridiculous discount.
I love it still. It’s done cyclocross racing, singletrack, touring, winter club rides, Audaxes… It’s my backup bike for most things and I still ride it more than it’s replacement!
It’s currently in road-ish mode on 40c slicks, kinesis cross light wheels on their second rebuild (17mm internal was wide back then) and a ritchey finishing kit.
Still on SRAM 10 speed but with hydraulic brifters (SRAM S700) and a SRAM Red Chainset set up 2x with 46/34 chainrings.
These things are an *incredible* bargain secondhand. Huge clearances and tough as nails. The only thing that’s not current spec is the QR wheels.

Great bike! I’ve got the 2016 model and apart from the creaky BB it’s brilliant. I’ve got 40mm tyres on mine with good clearance.
