The Concours de Machines 2023 took place at the famous Paris-Brest-Paris event.
With specifications as demanding as ever, the framebuilders had to present touring machines that were “light, comfortable, efficient, easily transportable, comfortable and meet the safety requirements of a 1200km event in less than 90 hours on open roads in a hilly region, in complete autonomy.”
Were they up to the task of tackling the 1218km of this 20th edition of the Paris-Brest-Paris ?

Where is Brest ? I have a little time to think ? No ? It’s that way Brest. This way. When you arrived in Brest back to Paris. It’s not just about cycling, far from it. The machine’s contest is a prize, for innovation in bicycle world. It’s not just bikes, it’s riders too. also this year, the Paris-Brest-Paris. An enormous sporting challenge. Bikes put through their paces, and pilots put through their paces. We were 9 members of the jury. It was exciting. We had some very rich discussions. There are lights on both sides. They’re everywhere. The other is battery-powered. Yes, but there are still some. It’s been hard, We’ve had a lot of discussions. We really wanted to meet the specifications, to the proposed schedule. A jury which was, attentive and very vigilant. Is there a connector for removing the rear luggage rack? Yes, you have to unscrew here and here. It was a very, very rewarding experience. It’s ok. Thanks. Have you been checked before? Yes, yes, I think so. Go on then Is it ok for the control? Have you been inspected or not ? Yes, well… I can’t wait for the start, we’ve been waiting for a while, and the last few days, things were a bit slow. I can’t wait to leave now. Do you want words or is that enough? Here we go. I couldn’t wait, I’m glad it’s starting now. It was a long weekend resting. Maeva, my pilot, is starting the Paris-Brest-Paris. for the machine’s contest, for which I’m presenting my new travel bike. What I really wanted was to see the contest from the inside. And to ride a bike, like the one Quentin made. I’m focused for the start. Have a good trip, see you soon. See you in a few days. See you soon. You are champions. Bravo bravo. Be carful, be careful. We had a flat tire. Kilometre. Eighty And we’re out of inner tubes. The tandem is a tool for meeting people. All the time. And today we’re bound by SNCF standards. with this ban, to travel in tandem. So we’ve got two couplers, to split the tandem in two. So we’ve got two couplers, to split the tandem in two. Everything is designed to travel later. And i think that, it gave us strength to know that we are the only female tandem, out of 38, that’s it ? We’d really like to that it inspires other women, to be able to be a pilot, co-pilot, and to make tandem 100% female. I’m going to sleep for maybe 1 hour and a half. But I’m trying to go, to get past Brest. If I can do it within 24 hours, I will be happy. That’s a bit difficult. But… get some sleep to digest this We haven’t done a quarter. You’re in Brittany. Is that right? If you’re from Brittany, that’s fine. It’s daylight in Fougères. Counterpetry The bike is ok, perfect. It rides really well. it responds, very quickly. The behaviour is cool, great. I didn’t build a bike especially for the contest. I re-used a bike I already had. And which I have slightly transformed and adapted for Paris-Brest-Paris. I had 45mm tyres fairly tight. I replaced them with 38 mm tyres. with some nice carbon mudguards that I made with t he built-in bamboo rods. I already had the truss fork. which I’ve adapted to fit a small pannier on the front. mounted on push-button. that it can be easily removed and replaced. I make my own bags. The bike weighs 14 kilos. Let’s go France! Let’s go, let’s go. Come on, 10 kilometres to go. I slept for an hour and a half. I’m all right. So I slept warm. Because it gets cold at night. I’ve stopped here because I saw 3 guys lying there. I thought it was pretty good. On that bike, we have the cockpit, completely bespoke with extensions, which is removable, adjustable, The idea is to really have something super versatile. The lights are integrated, something super versatile. The lights are integrated, which is all inside the frame. You can’t see anything. We have second-hand parts too, You can’t see anything. We have second-hand parts too, We really went for a configuration, long-distance race. The idea is not to travel, it’s not about gravel riding or adventure. for the rest, for paint I love these colours and they match the brand. It’s the lightest. It’s starting to sting a bit, but we’re at 430, it’s normal. Is it a flexible bike? It’s comfortable. Yes. Very Bamboo, carbon. Bamboo and carbon junction. Here, I’ve got it all planned. Who’s the manufacturer? It’s me. Is it a bit gravel or not ? It’s basically a gravel bike. which I have adapted a little for the Paris-Brest-Paris. Ok And in terms of solidity ? I tried to break some but couldn’t. It was fine, it didn’t rain. Quite a lot of fog at one point. Quite a lot of humidity. I had this Merino stuff, there really were droplets on it. I stopped and saw Antoine, This is Antoine’s second Paris-Brest-Paris. as opposed to the guy who rides a wooden bike. And, that’s it. I’ve done the Paris-Brest-Paris 7 times myself. There are the contest specifications, but above all there were Théo’s specifications. The specification was for a Paris-Brest-Paris bike’s, but not just that. We’ve taken the problem backwards. The bike is designed to work with two different pairs of wheels. A pair in 27.5, 2 inch 2. And a pair of 700 with an almost identical external diameter. The bike weighs 11kilos 5 including luggage. Now it’s back to the house. We stop doing this strange thing, which is to move away from the finish line. Then, there’s the return. In fact, we’re in great shape. So that’s cool. We slept for 2 hours and 45 minutes. today Two hours yesterday. We took a 15-minute nap. Now I’m starting to worry about Ah, it’s hard going uphill. But good spirits, Ah, it’s hard going uphill. But good spirits, A good feeling despite the fatigue. So we’re a lot better than yesterday. Yesterday we’re so tired, we hadn’t slept at all. The heat We only took micro naps. We arrived in Carhaix very tired. So we took a big break in Carhaix. We arrived at 10.30pm. We left at 10am. We had a shower and everything. We took a real break, and even if you’ve only had 4 hours’ sleep, It’s really revitalised us. it’s a new beginning now It’s perfect timing, we’ve changed direction. I think we’re going to finish it. this Paris-Brest-Paris. 569 km to go. For this bike, we worked with 3D prints. It’s something we like. And which, in our opinion, adds a little dynamism And which, in our opinion, adds a little dynamism the vision of craftsmanship and brings a bit of novelty. It’s hard to get going uphill. But on straights or downhill, It’s super comfortable. That’s cool. A 3d printed connector here, which makes for a fairly fluid line and pass the cable internally down to the rear light. A truss fork revisited using 3D printing. There’s also all the graphic design work, and finishes. in fact Anaïs just wanted a green bike. not too flashy. Glitter. Glitter, that was her brief. We had quite a bit of freedom from then on, to create a painting rather worked The idea was to say that, we’d like the bike to carry a souvenir that he was made for the Paris-Brest-Paris. so I drew up a roadmap that he was made for the Paris-Brest-Paris. so I drew up a roadmap knowing that I don’t know the route at all. I’ve just got my little Eiffel Tower which reminds me that we’re leaving Paris, and my little lighthouse and the sea which reminds me that we’re arriving in Brest. If anyone’s watching this without knowing that the bike was made for the Paris-Brest-Paris He’s not supposed to guess. I found it interesting that it was something that just evokes the travel I found it interesting that it was something that just evokes the travel and crossing different landscapes with this little wink that only she can understand. We go through Gouarec but it’s not a checkpoint It’s just a welcome thing. we are going to cross. Loudéac We’ll be there around 8.00, 8.30 p.m. We’ll sleep there. I think we’ll do 2 hours. Are you ok ? Yes It’s hot Yes a little. Everything is going well, I’ve just had a bit of a slump, when we started to tackle climbs. After Brest, it’s a real leg-breaker. But otherwise, So far I’ve I have a good feeling, I feel good, I’m enjoying myself So that’s cool. I think I’m riding, I’m more used to riding gravel on the road. riding on gravel. Now I’m easily 2 or 3 kilometres per hour faster. Geometry of the bike is just too good. See you soon This is the most difficult part of the day, always between 16 and 18. Why ? It’s hot. I went off the rails 2 or 3 times in front and By the 3rd or 4th time, the chain has really which got stuck between between the chainrings and the derailleur. But otherwise everything’s fine. My sister and dad surprised me to come and cheer me on along the route. But I don’t see them there. I saw them along the route 2 kilometres ago But I think they’ll be here soon. I don’t know if I slept. I’m here for an hour and a half. I lay down, I don’t remember much, so I may have slept the whole time. B 082, bravo Théo congratulation for that Paris-Brest-Paris you ve done Go on the right just after arch please Thank you, congatulation Hélène, Hélène, Hélène … Control, 50 metres Take again the place. Paris, good luck and enjoy your journey Straight ahead Paris Thanks We’re searching, we’ve lost a friend. François He was not at the control. Straight ahead Paris We’re fine, we’ve just slept 4 hours and half in a super omnisport hall. Yes On a tatami. It was cool. On the first part, I had this knee that was hurting me. So I compensated with the other, and now i v got… In fact, I’m in a lot of pain. I’ll try to get to Fougères but I think it will be my final touch for Paris-Brest-Paris I’m a bit exhausted. It’s a great adventure. Now I feel confident. But all you have to do is fall, like Anaïs, right? Yes mechanical breakdown too, even if we have on-site assistance It’s good, it reassures. They say it’s autonomous, but We have a lot of help. I’m happy. Are you ok ? It was windy, damn it. It’s still better than in Belgium. In Belgium, it’s always windy now. It’s hard right now. This is a complicated time. We have 22 hours left to cover 300km. We need to solve this equation. Knowing that we no longer have any resources. But we’ll make it. Last night was extremely complicated. I slept in Noudéac, I was lucky, I was lucky, there was room in the dormitory So I slept on a real bed. 2.5 hours But it was on a real bed. When I arrived, I was a corpse I was staggering, I couldn’t really stand up. I really needed to sleep, and when I woke up, I wasn’t much better, but I left anyway And with the new day, now that’s better, I play music to motivate myself. People like it. It’s so cool. It adds a bit of atmosphere, it’s fun. I’m trying to tell myself that we’re closer to the finish than from the beginning It motivates me. I’m starting to think that it’s possible to finish this horrible thing. good luck Thanks you so much Final straight Yes You’ll make it Yes very simple Thanks This night was so cool, Thanks This night was so cool, I rode with Italians so nice. They wanted to stay with me because I have music It was Céline Dion when they came, They liked. And after, i put Jain, Makeba, they knowed it, it was funny. I finally took their wheels, because they rode at my pace. And then I got a bit hungry, so I had to leave them. But I saw them again later. I speak a little Italian, so I spoke 2 or 3 words. They remembered me, Héléna, Héléna It was so cute. Are you ok ? Yes You have an 11 in the back and a 38 10-45 And i m happy because i used it on 45. Just to get there, They did no favours to get you into control a bit of ass When you cycle to towns, which are called Mortagne-au-Perche, St Martin en Haut some name like that…beware I m dead It’s very hot. I fell down. I hurt myself a bit. I damaged the bike a bit. But it works. It was a bit demoralising. I had planned to be here in Fougères, this morning for the breakfast. As you can see, it’s a complete failure. 293 to go Sublime finish At the best time. Right after the aperitif. I’m ok If you’d seen me in Dreux, I wouldn’t have said that. Now i m ok. Finally, the last one. You can’t see my face anymore. I’m checking the frame for cracks, Some parts… skinned, Fork and frame are ok No problem Nice veiled wheel on the front The Idéale saddle is in good condition ? In perfect condition. I’m lucky enough to have sets, I think it’s 46-30 And I really enjoyed it, but a little too much, full energy then recovery, energy as in training But it’s fun. Always riding at the same speed is boring. As soon as there was gravel on the climbs, I used to take a bit of gravel for a little variety. One guy told me, when you get to the finish you say to yourself, "Never again!" but 4 years later, you’re here again. I don’t know another guy from Marseille, asked me what I was doing in 4 years’ time I already don’t know what I’m doing next week, cool, we will see… We were in Villaines-la-Juhel, Great massage, so cool. during 20 minutes all, hands, feet the back We set off again, good The feet, it was incredible, It was the first time for me. Hey Hey, how are you ? Yes and you ? it’s all about you. The last 45 kilometres as a dancer otherwise perfect, Until 45 kilometres ago perfect. Very good It was great Super beautiful We had lots and lots of laughs with the Christophe The crankset moves. Look at it this way, it’s obvious. I don’t know at what kilometre I met the first Christophe kilometre 50 So, you are the first Christophe. Yes i m the first The morning Kouign-amann in Brest, We met Christophe the green, who rode with us, And Christophe the white, today, this evening at 900 km but which was funny, we were driving in 3, peacefully a fourth person joins the group, very fluidly which takes over seamlessly, We’re not used to seeing that on Paris-Brest And after, After 20 minutes, 20 or 25 minutes to ride with, Christophe the green said, You know what’s the name of our friend ? No Christophe… Yes, it’s ok I took some painkillers, my shoulders are a bit sore We are a little broken Getting started, of this kind of bike, doing this on Paris-Brest is it’s a little bit hardcore but We are super happy, first of all, we get on well, it’s getting better all the time I enjoy riding this machine, We’re 40 kilometres from the finish. It’s not dead. We’ll stay alert but, we’re on the right way. I discovered the Paris-Brest-Paris, it’s fantastic, 80 countries, It’s incredible. People everywhere, by the roadside the villages that welcome us. A top-class organisation. A human adventure, beyond sport It’s not all about cycling, far from it. not just sport. I’m I’m tyred I spent the whole night, wondering if I was going to make it in time I had a doubt at one point I thought I had miscalculated, and the deadline was 9am but I think it’s 11:15 am. Normally, if I don’t have any problems, that should do it. Frankly, we’re going on, aren’t we? I was told, if you do it once, watch out you risk doing it for the rest of your life, Well, I’ve got 4 years to think about it !
