Hello There, bike mechanic apprentice here. I got these carbonwheels from a old triathlon bike. The bike got damaged during shipping and the costumer doesnt need it anymore. So I asked him if I could salvage the usable components and he didn’t mind.

So about the question. The front wheel has these material “shavings”?? I don’t know whats the right name for these damages. But it looks like these junks of metal have broken off. Do you think that they are still safe to ride? Would be awesome.

Thanks for the replies!

  1. Have you cleaned them ? It looks like it’s corrosion, seems fitting for a tt bike due to sweat and other bodily fluids often landing on these bikes. Clean around the spoke hubs with an old toothbrush and a detergent, then have another look at it.
On the second picture, one of the spoke holes looks like there’s a bigger hole in the alu, is that just dirt/filth/corrosion or actual damage to the hub ?

Me personally i’d just ride it, it’s the front wheel so not really seeing huge loads, if the spoke tension feels about right i would just ride them. The damage is odd, looks more like corrosion. Was it used on a turbo trainer or something for a while?
