Hi, I've got a grail CF SL 7 gen 1 in early November, I love it really especially since I've changed my wheels for some carbon ones. One thing I've been bothered with is that I figured out that I can't shift up the front derailleur when climbing, been trying to do that when going out of the saddle with some 5% climb, and the chain just won't shift up, I've 0 issue when riding flat but that issue made me think maybe it's not a normal behaviour. After some research I've found out it's not a good practice but I was wondering if a GRX groupset maybe could be able to sustain the load.

Tried refitting the FD multiple times but still have this behaviour. I don't remember having this issue when I first starting riding the bike but pretty sure I didn't even tried to shift up when climbing as I wasn't good at climbing at the time.

  1. Why do you want to shift up on the FD at 5% incline?
I can fairly easily ride very fast on 5% incline by just shifting on the rear mech

  2. You really should not use the FD when pushing hard on pedals (such as steep climbs), and even more so shifting up (from small to big). The chain is under a lot of tension then, the FD cannot pull it.

As you approach the climb, shift to small in the front, and then do the rest with the RD.

Shifting the FD under load also increases the chances of chain drop or chain suck, which you definitely do NOT want when you are under load!
