Grew up riding bmx. A lot of bmx. In 2016 I decided that I wanted to start riding more for fitness and commuting so I dropped a decent (but not crazy) chunk of change on a Specialized Sirrus. Probably only rode it 10 times, no further than 8 miles and a brutal 8 miles at that. Hated every minute of it. Decided I just hated cycling and it wasn’t for me.
Fast forward to March of this year. Winter in Chicago was coming to an end and I was getting a tickle to try again and that I don’t hate cycling, but just hated the bike. Took a gamble, splurged on a Specialized Diverge Comp Carbon. Been on it for about 3 weeks and the bet paid off.
Did a couple 5 mile rides, then a couple 10… 15… 20. Just got back from a 26 mile ride and feel like I could have done another 20.
To be fair I probably could have had a similar experience on a diverge with less expensive specs, but I’m happy with my choice.

Hell yeah. Grew up riding bmx/fixed and swore off drop bar bikes for a long time. Finally got a Giant Defy back in 2022 that fit me and it was like a revelation. Moved on from that and now all my bikes are drop bar. 😂
Yeah man. I built my first adult bike. And I think that made me like the bike more. Turned out to be enough to get me into it. That was 4 years ago. Now I have a custom frame built by a friend. Which make me like it a lot. So I ride it a lot 🙂
Hmm, interesting. I like flat bar bikes, they’re just a different vibe. My drop bar bike is fast and comfy, the flat bar is nice for cruising a bit slower and getting some practical use out of the bike.
