The city of České Budějovice was founded in 1265 by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. The city grew rapidly and developed economically thanks to its status as a royal city and its location at the intersection of trade routes. In order to strengthen the loyalty of the city’s inhabitants to the royal authority, Budějovice was endowed with various privileges by the king.

At the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century, two Catholic churches were built in the city, and the city itself was surrounded by a fortress wall. Throughout the 15th century, Budějovice, with its strong Catholic Church presence, served as a stronghold in the struggle against the Hussites. The city had a population of 4,000 inhabitants and was one of the largest and most significant cities in the Kingdom of Bohemia.

In the 16th century, the city experienced a strong economic boom, primarily due to silver mining, as well as the development of fishing and salt trade. The construction of buildings in Budějovice during this period followed the canons of Renaissance architecture. In 1569, a mint was established in Budějovice where coins were minted from silver mined in the surrounding areas.

The Thirty Years’ War did not cause significant damage to the city, but in July 1641, a major fire destroyed more than half of the houses. The reconstruction of the city lasted several decades. The Baroque era significantly changed the appearance of the city, during which several religious buildings were constructed, as well as the Samson Fountain in the central square, which became one of the symbols of the city.

In the 18th century, the city’s cultural significance grew with the founding of a Latin gymnasium, a municipal theater, and a philosophical institute. Under Emperor Joseph II in 1785, the Budweis Bishopric was established.

In the 19th century, technological progress affected many aspects of the city’s life. The horse-drawn railway, built between 1825 and 1832 and connecting České Budějovice with Linz, was the first of its kind in Europe. During this period, river navigation on the Vltava River also developed. The development of transportation was closely linked to the growth of industry and trade. In 1847, the “Hardtmuth” company (producer of “Koh-i-Noor” stationery) from Vienna relocated pencil and ceramic production to Budějovice, leading to the establishment of the first major factory in the city. In 1895, the Czech Joint-Stock Brewery was founded, now known as the “Budweiser Budvar” brewery.

Until the end of the 19th century, the population of the city and surrounding villages was predominantly German, but gradually the Czech population became dominant. However, until 1918, the mayors of the city were Germans. In 1945, after the end of World War II, German residents of Budweis were deported to West Germany and Austria.

In the 20th century, České Budějovice became the economic and cultural capital of South Bohemia. Since 1991, the South Bohemian University has been operating in České Budějovice, and since 2000, the administration of the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic has been located in the city.
