Was on a ride, was on some weird brickwork road and felt some give after doing a hard stop. Had some coffee with a friend said I thought my cog is slipping. Thought nothing of it rode home and when I went to tighten cog I saw this, hahaha! Close call for sure. Already fixed and back riding….

I’ve done this before 😬. Heard some pinging noises while going pretty fast on a gravel descent, assuming it was the noise of pebbles getting flung about. Then I’m freewheeling for half a second, then my drivetrain and rear wheel are completely locked up. Kept it upright as I came to stop, hopped off to look at my drivetrain and I’m missing 4 of my chain bolts and my chainring is bent to fuck.
I had just installed the chainring the day before and actually done an alley cat right after – went for a sunrise cruise the next morning when it rattled apart. Anyway, moral of the story is tighten up those bolts with the proper tool.
Its happened to me countless times. The telltale sign is a clunking noise and a scary amount of play when slowing down/pushing forward. I took a ride to Mt Tamalpais couple of weeks ago and heard/felt it like it happened in the past. ALL the bolts were loose to a heinous degree when checking it out. Luckily I didn’t lose any
Nowadays I carry spare bolts and a chainring spanner.
Blue Loc-tite is your friend
Ahh the pinging noises
I folded a chain ring once because of this. Locked up the drive train and skidded to a halt. No idea how I didn’t crash and had a long, cold walk home carrying my bike on my shoulder in the middle of the night during a Canadian February.
Chains ring bolts now get blue lock tite.
