EPISODE #145
I get out for a ride with my Portuguese cycling buddy David and he finally takes me to somewhere he has been wanting to take me for a while. I thought we was meant to go out on an enjoyable ride… but it seems he has other plans, taking m up the most steep and revered climb in the area. Its name is “Socorro” which directly translates to “help” and I really couldn’t think of a more fitting name for this climb. It was brutal…

ah David sorry I thought you said we was going to have fun today make sure I charge my garment make sure I’ve charge my lights make sure we get those bars in 10 miles and I’ll be more than starving nothing compared to the thrill under prepared for the hills I used to get wheels on air now I put air in my wheels change thatat tune train and cruise chains been L pace and move stra stats give man a heart attack but then my Pace improves BS and CAD is are strong now my legs up my Cadence are long it’s about time we do the sister CA [Music] tourist what is up guys if you’re new here then welcome to the channel and if you’re regular then welcome back today is a public holiday here in Portugal and well if you’re a cyclist then there’s only one way to start the day and that’s out on the bike today I’m going to meet up with a dear dear friend of mine and we’re going to go have some fun he said it’s going to be fun anyway not sure believe him [Applause] [Music] well in the interest of keeping these videos real as you can see from that disgusting cloud in the background there it definitely isn’t always sunny in Portugal folks are bringing the rain David yeah you’re welcome I brought it back from the UK oh my God that is definitely raining now oh yes it’s just a shower hopefully yep I mean it doesn’t like [Music] it oh dear see they have big fun oh yeah and and snails should we just not ride and have a big fun Orelia which is Pig’s um ear like shared yeah disgusting as well is there any normal things on the menu uh soup oh toaster Mis I know that be cheese and ham toasty lovely whose idea was this David yours was it was yeah oh dear is that say sun right now yeah pretty sunny yeah [Music] is that where we’re going yeah oh dear we’re going all the way up there and apparently it’s a really fun climb isn’t it short but s what is it called The Climb s if you’re English you pronounce it Soko what is that this mean what does it mean help help yeah oh God I think we all know if a climbs called help it’s not going to end well is [Music] it so as soon as we turn right the climb is U made of two parts M like there’s a first part and then there’s a little downhill and then I’m since in some nervous energy from David and uh I’m not sure why but it’s the experience staring I’ve got a feeling this is going to hurt now I’m not exactly sure what the stats of this climb are but they’re pretty disgusting and I’ll put them on the screen right now there we go straight into my smallest gear or as they say in Portugal ABIA and the sign says 15% so let’s hope they doesn’t get any more steeper than that from David’s laugh I’m guessing that’s not true this is easy [Applause] [Music] I’m dying already I’ve been eating too many pastel donatas for this turn left try not to look up put own good thanks for that David oh my God we’re halfway up the clim and I’m already toast oh god well I make it to the top David’s warned me this next bit is even worse so yeah let’s get it done let’s hope that I don’t vomit [Music] 177% apparently at the minute the sign lied to us the sign was the average okay really really oh yeah I’m seeing 20% now it’s crazy cuz this section right now is 12% and it feels flat and I’m actually feel like I’m getting arrest but don’t know if you can make that out but it’s going back up a David sorry I thought you said we was going to have fun today yes we had at the coffee I’m having to lean so far forward so that I don’t do a wheelie we’re back at 20% it’s all for that view though look at that [Music] [Music] [Music] oh good yeah lovely oh oh my God that was rough oh I’m just going to die here a minute well that’s one hell of a view almost makes the pain worth it I’ll let you guys be the judge of that if you want to come here and try it yourself I won’t tell you to though because I don’t want you to blame me blame David if he blame anyway yeah I must say I won’t be in a hurry to come back I think it’s uh one and done as they say that is pretty special though I won’t lie [Music] so did you like it uh type fun I wouldn’t use the word like for it the good thing is it’s not that long of a climb so you know you’ve only got to suffer for a little while that was pretty uh sketchy on The Descent it was like crosswind wet ground all all the things you don’t want when you’re coming down the mountain gradi yeah yeah I was definitely uh clenching the handlebars as hard as I could one thing’s for certain though my trusty Super 6 high mod is now running absolutely perfect I took it to uh go see our good friend Bruno over at ATX cycling he did an absolute overhaul on it and well it really needed it to be honest I had neglected this bike for so long it had lived on my Turbo trainer for well over a year and uh well i’ basically just sweated all over it and made it absolutely disgusting all of the bearings were seized uh you could barely you could barely even turn the handlebars that’s how bad it was uh so yeah Bruno sorted us out and uh put new bottom bracket in new headset uh loads of other servicing parts and I even swapped in my 38 CM handlebars so it’s feeling just how I want it it’s definitely good to be back on this bike it’s uh it’s almost like putting on a old pair of trainers that you love it just feels right you know don’t get me wrong the trk was a wonderful bike but I just feel at home on this bike funny thing is I thought I was going to have quite a lot of views in the comments talking about the fact I changed bikes when in reality I had more people talking about this bloody helmet this is the uh map and cast collaboration helmet brand new hot on the press and I’ve even got it in the lovely black and purplish smoke color that they do it’s uh yeah first impressions are it’s a fantastic helmet [Music] [Applause] [Music] well here we go apparently the uh the best P after awarded awarded I’ll be the judge we see this is why I’m fat David’s a bad influence we are fat we can’t we can’t just have one [Music] dessert pretty good one well we’re back on the road and uh it’s raining again all part of the fun I did just eat a very delicious pastel Nat though so I can’t complain 45k in two pastel natas two espressos one massive climb and some rain ah you can’t can’t go wrong with that can you [Music] so it turned out to be a great ride today even though the climb itself was pretty brutal it was definitely made up for by that incredible view definitely a bit of type two fun as they say but of course fun nevertheless we ended up with 2 hours 40 the clock almost 70k and over 1,200 M of climbing so it was a pretty decent ride in the end anyways as I said the ride was a lot of fun but I have something else planned for today arguably something even more fun see here’s the thing last time when I came I did feel like this place was very nearly perfect but one of the things that let it down was I didn’t have anywhere to ride my faithful BMX I mean there is a small skate park in edisa but it’s not particularly good for BMX it’s more just to cruise around on a skateboard but that’s changed now [Music] [Music] this is the new skate park here in Mafra and this is the first time I’m seeing it and it’s pretty mental this is right on my doorstep mate how lucky am [Music] I well what a way to end the day that uh skate park being just down the road from us as ticked one final box for me I’m so so happy about that and as an added bonus the skate park is actually sick it is a really well fought Out Skate Park everything flows and the quality of the ramps are brilliant I really couldn’t ask for much more to be honest so what with a great ride this morning getting to see David and then uh walk on the beach and then finish it off with the skate Park I mean what a fantastic day does life get much better than this I hope you guys have enjoyed this episode thanks very much for watching please like comment and subscribe and I’ll see you guys next time [Music]

    1. David is the perfect guy to go for a ride… especially with you. Really fun to watch…not sure you agree with the fun part on that 20% part…but Portugal is not flat as many might think 🤙😜

    2. So you guys know, many cyclists, like me, changed their subscription to the grandfondo in Torres Vedras last month because of this climb. If you wanted to avoid it at the end of your race, you had to choose the Minifondo because the Mediofondo and the Granfondo had at least 8 climbs and 80+ kms before that. You should try one of these Granfondos, Tom! "It's fun!" 😂😂😂

    3. Nice video and welcomeback to Portugal
I did the climb socorro for the first time during the Grandfondo Torres Vedras
Killer climb especially three quarters of the way into the ride

    4. I’m struggling not to hack up a lung at 20%, never mind commentate! And for such a small road, impressive how good the tarmac is, immaculate.

    5. Great to see you hsving so much fun😂…I think I will take my roadbike now and take a ride ❤ we come on the 20th may to porto(city). You are not perhaps there in this time? Beste regards from Trier, Germany

    6. Nice contrast from the UK to Portugal, the road to BMX. I was thinking you would pull the rocket vomit move on that monster climb! Do youtubers ever collaborate? I know a certain Amy and Kyle who do soul cycling content like yourself and seems Kyle is due for some new tattoos.

    7. Have to watch other cyclist climb, life in the delta is a battle against the WIND. New Orleans to Nashville on the Natchez Trace. MAAP Faast Crew jerseys 🙏

    8. It was a great opportunity for you to set a good example of a BMX rider using the skate park assuming that it was envisioned to be for skate boarders primarily.

    9. Anytime my cycling friends say we’re going to have some fun it either means I’m going to get drug up and down some steep hills or nice easy pace ride becomes a Viking death march
