I find out what it’s like to go on a train journey on a bike. Thankfully I had a lightweight Fiido C21 to use for my journey.

right let’s get this camera on we have a um a bike review to do today we’ve got a fedo c21 it is an electric bike although first glances it doesn’t look like one much does it and um it’s all good cuz it only weighs 18 kg right let’s turn the new camera on I’ve gone off and uh purchased the uh new insta 360 cam we’re going to have a little look to see what it’s like today um right let me tell you what we’re doing with the bike um it’s a nice light bike 18 kg superb um makes a change let’s just get past these bins sorted let’s not scratch um the car we’re all good so yeah what are we doing today we are um heading on a road trip now what I’m doing is I’m seeing what it’s like to let’s just uh let this one out um sorry it’s just one of my neighbors um yeah we’re on a road trip we’re going to see what it’s like to commute um on a bike I don’t think this camera is brilliant let’s quickly change this camera position little bit of an experiment with this today but anyhow that one should be a little bit better but we’ve got the 360 cam anyway that should be a little bit better I think it might be a little bit low now but anyway we’ll survive with the this uh 360 camera so we are going um on uh train ride I’m going across the hull to meet Charles from dash cam Hull so I thought I tell you what perfect opportunity to actually see what it’s like commuting with a bike so um fedo sent me um this bike um it’s not even turned on yet to be fair I might not turn it on just yet it’s lighting enough to be used just as a normal bike um and we’re going to see what the traveling on a train with a bike is exactly like I’ve got a couple of changes to make I’ve got to get from here to uh here for Zak to Lime Street and then uh we’re going to Liverpool Central first and then what we’re doing is um we’re walking down to Lim Street getting Lime Street down into Sheffield and then Sheffield we’re going across the rest of the country to Hull so um it should be an interesting little trip we’ve got different rail providers and we’re going to see what it’s like on all of them so it’s um it’s about time I did this let’s get out in primary I’m not even going to turn the bike on yet don’t feel a need too and um this is ideal for a commuter bike I think this fedo c21 18 kg it’s still got a 250 W Motor so if you needed it um you’ve got it um 40 kg of torque or 40 40 kg 40 Newton met of torque um but the good thing is for me is like I said the wait put a big backpack on today with only camera gear I’m going to see whether I can haul this all the way to uh to Hull without problems now I’m actually glad the weather is like it is today it’s a little bit miserable so if I get absolutely soaked that’s just one of those things the fedo c21 doesn’t look like any of my other electric bikes they’ve all got massive big batteries stuck um obviously out this one the battery is removable removable would speak properly but it’s not advisable um it’s not something that you would remove then charge there is a a further extended range battery which goes on a rack at the bik at the back um so I haven’t got that just got the normal one I think I can go there and don’t forget this is not on battery power this is just uh good old overweight Ashley at the moment and I am uh going to be do some Fair bit of training over the next year though news to come on the channel soon um so it’s nice to have the lightness of this bike it reminds me I’m just going to get out in primary here going through this Junction um it reminds me the old days riding a bicycle it’s got no suspension so you got to keep an eye out for uh the poor bits in the road it’s got sort of gravel spec tires it’s got mud guards it’s got hydraulic brakes um the controls we’re going to have a little look at them shortly um but all the screens top quality even the tool kit that comes with it when you put it together does half look like a quality piece of kit it’s just over ,000 so it’s I think it’s probably one of the cheapest bikes that I’ve um reviewed on the channel but let’s see how it cops today we’re all good and here we are at theak train station I am just going to pull in on the left here at this top of this hill and then we shall Dismount so um the bike doesn’t look like the stereotyp or lacky bike I’ve got my lock on um so we can uh we can get it locked up while it’s on the train um let’s see what forac is like it could go down the steps but they do have good disabled access which obviously helps with the push bikes no problems get me phone out cuz we’ll have to pay for this ticket we’ll pay for the other one thank you okay so there is a lift down at the other side but I know these steps well they’re not too big so I’m just going to wheel my bike down this way um we’ve got some new trains on uh this Kirby line um on Mery rail at the minute they’ve got better access they got lower steps you have to step up on the platform already seen what the bike access is like and it’s down a far far end this is something I’d just like to just quickly talk about as well bike storage at train stations that’s good it also encourages people not to use the cars um looks quite straightforward not accessed it so it couldn’t tell you what it’s like but I’ll uh leave that for another day glad the rain’s got off what would happen if it was raining I’ve got to travel to Hull and um would that be something that you then uh s you sat in wet clothes for 3 hours while you’re on the train potentially I know you could take waterproofs but um got a big heavy bag I’ve got my laptop in here and I’ve got a fair bit of camera gear like I said I’m doing some filming with Charles from dash cam Hull so um didn’t have any room to take a change of clothes I suppose um if you weren’t with all the camera gear you obviously could but would it be something that you would consider when uh when you were taking a journey would you take your bike see how easy it is today and see whether it can convince you to so to turn the bike on there’s a switch down at the bottom there and then it’s a simple case of pressing and holding the button and that’s it the display is lovely not sure whether you’ll be able to see it much with the camera sometimes the uh refresh rate um and the resolution on the camera doesn’t suit these LCD screens um but it is a nice bit kit can turn our lights on um got a horn here down on this side there’s a manual way of adjusting the modes um this switches between what we’ve done and that’s trip wise and all that information and then we’ve got this button changes it from normal to sport to Turbo to Turbo plus back to nothing nothing then to Eco I’m going to leave it in Eco um Range wise what they say for Eco it’s getting on for 100 kilm I have used this bike a little bit I did a video recently um where I tested out the Garmin radar for the uh for the bikes and all right I had it a little bit more than uh Eco and normal I had on turbo at one point cuz it was really windy but the battery seemed to deplete quite a lot so um it might be something that you think about if you thinking about purchasing this particular bike like I said there is a range extender but um it’s not something that I’ve uh I’ve fitted but here’s our train let’s have a little look to see uh how we fit on clearly signposted bike access cheers buddy everyone’s Glo this morning Ary actually as the footy last night go okay well that was super easy no issues with Mery rail um getting on there trains cycle area was good um not going up the escalator let’s see whether I can get in the uh the lift easy enough do this just a littley I’ll go I’ll go up the escalator all yeah nobody’s let’s just make sure I’m not going to cause anyone any problems pretty easy with a light bike it’s nice to be nice probably get shouted that coming up here in the on the bike now anyway bothered everybody this throw away one all right cheers buddy so yeah we uh we didn’t test the uh the lifts out here at Central um but I’m sure there’s a there’s enough room um so first stage of the journey done that’s uh that’s the short one we’ve now got to uh get ourselves to Central Station I’m going to have little go at the bike in uh it’s modowe now to be honest and I’m going to do a little bit of riding there’s not much riding to do um but I’m just going to cross this road and then uh just go around the corner I’m going to change the mode to not turbo Eco this is the rain a we’re good saying that has had a little bit of hail it’s the end of April our country is messed in it um but the weather’s not too bad at the minute but if it was um it would make this journey totally different so let’s have a little go to see what the bik’s like with it’s assistance of straights when you off I’m in the wrong gear going uphill and it’s brilliant and this is an Eco it’s got a torque sensing motor and already straight away we’re uh we’re up and going comfortably it is limited to 15 and a half miles hour so um it’s a legal bike a legal not illegal and I’m glad for the uh mud guards today I think as well be getting splashed and sat on a train for ages so I am going to um I might actually just Dismount here and uh and walk cuz that’s how quick of uh ride it was so yeah we’re doing a bike review today it’s not going to be loads of riding for this bit in fact the next time I’m going to be riding is in Hall so um are we all right walking across here I think we are all good so Lime Street Station easiest entrance is up here to the right hand side rather than uh taking it up through the steps then I’ve got to find where I need to get my tickets and then uh we’re going to have a little look at the cycle storage on this train to Sheffield that I’m going to pick up in about about 40 minutes so I’ve got here quite early um I always tend to do that just in case I’d rather uh be a little bit early and sit off and get a um the coffee or something but um bit of a weight around so be it so there’s my train fform I’m just going to let most of these people get off first if I was walking I would probably um Carry On but it’s a little bit different with the bike I’m in no rush still 20 minutes until uh the train leaves that’s plenty of time to get me bike on looks as though it’s clearing a little excuse me buddy where where’s the bike access uh in the doors y so the next set of doors yeah lovely thank you you it here by C easy enough honestly that’s pretty good I can lock it up as well look those things I think they go around yeah they do if you put it back in the way I you think so but me just put me lid down okay we are good let’s turn it off all right that was easy enough let’s have a little on um we’re going now doors open no right [Music] it’s even light enough to carry downstairs it’s one handed as well no in a world I could do that with any of the other bikes so here we go for a scarra on time and no more changes up to now relatively straightforward there’s been no major issue I’m just going to keep out the way a little bit but it has been held with the lightness of this bike and sa’s waiting for lifts all the time um using the lifts when uh when people could be using them um who need to use them is a little bit of a b bug bear of mine but at least we’ve been able to uh hurry this thing um let’s see what this next train is going to be like is this our one coming in do believe it is let’s uh go and find the bike area [Music] not those sections bike area here oh we’re good all right okay that’s pretty good it’s nice little spot even get a even get me own seat says use straps provided but the rain’s any so just got to uh keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn’t go uh doesn’t go west okay um easy enough let’s get these cameras off and uh let’s get away to Hull the is please remain Vigilant if you think anything suspicious so here we are at Hull let’s just swap around to the side um all in all no issues there were some delays with the trains but there was nothing problematic with actually taking your bike on the uh the railways well not the railways on the train you get where I’m coming from um I was a little um surprised that there was only a couple of spaces the best obviously the best cycle areas I found were the ones local to me my uh local service are brand new trains the rest stock that I’ve been on today has been in my opinion a little bit dilapidated um but end of the day served the purpose I’m here at Hall I’m on the other side of the country and we’ve had no issues you take that second one for us mate in fact could you hold that one for us take that one and I’m done there you go all right there you go thank you for your help multitask cheers okay um nice guy for helping me out um so now let’s go and have a little ride of this bike like I said I have ridden it before um I did a little video on my cycling Channel um let’s just put the stand down a sec I did a little video on the cycling Channel where I tested out the Garmin radar um don’t know whether this video is going to go out before or after but in any case check it out now what I am going to do is I’m going to head wherever I need to go now to go and see Charles let’s have a little ride of the bike and uh see where we’re at it found out where I’m going where directions can we get out down here no that’s not the way must be this way I think what I’m going to do I’m going to just start riding I’m going to get out the way of this um van there’s obviously some movement up there oh the van stopped so I’m all good right I think I’ll just get moving then uh my screen can get into into border and it can show me where I’m going to go let’s turn the bike on so I’m suspecting no entry there okay where do I go then do I go out down the far end where do I go obviously not ah it’s one to me to go down this way um I think I can go down here it says uh is that no entry on the floor yes it is didn’t see that wasn’t marked pretty well right um let’s go out down this way it wants me to turn left onto the main road there we go I think we’re all right doing that just going to nip out here and um Booker left we’ve got a cycle area as well which is nice so the bike does feel um it feels really light I know it is compared to what I’m used to um no problem’s that to just deal with a few few people there it has got a horn I’m just going to quickly use the horn to show you no stoping at that one so I got a horn should have used it there had a chance to use it I that’s quite good um but yeah the bike’s super light um it seems really well put together mentioned before about the um tool kit that comes with it fabulous it was quite easy to put together it was a little bit more to it than other bikes that I’ve had you had to sort of like put the screen together but it wasn’t too difficult um it was quite straightforward so I had no problems doing it is are the bike that I would go for myself I actually do think it would um I think I would uh quite happily commute on a bik like this the handlebars are quite low though it’s quite a a sporty uh ride in position it might not suit some but I’m sure there would be a different set of bars that you could get right where am I going I’m going straight on I’m going left a little bit further up here that’s fine but it does an half shift I’m doing 20 M hour um and I’m actually beyond the pedal assistance so um it is a it’s a decent Pacey uh Pacey bike that’s just in normal mode as well so that’s all good but like I said these the the bars are set quite far away and quite low down don’t know whether that would suit everyone um me I’d rather be up a little bit I like to be a little bit higher rather than bum up in the air and head head and hands down I do prefer to be up a little bit so I can see a little bit more I think it tends to force you down that way a little touch um but it’s still okay but it does look like um a bike that’s not electric some of the uh concoctions that people um well people manufacturers make nowadays they’re just honestly ridiculous um this as I did earlier on this morning you could just ride uh without pedal assistance and I did got pedal assistance on normal here um it is significantly faster again when you put it into turbo or Turbo plus but um honestly you don’t need it i’ got to be careful with this one that’s okay they were quite slow I’m all right with that so we are just going ahead have a little look on where we’ve got to go quite nice cycle infrastructure here in Hull quite like that it’s saying I’ve just got um one mile or just under a mile well 1.8 until I get to Charles’s I’m not going to show everyone where Charles lives but um I do want to and I did want to have a little bit of a ride so I am going to try and go past this guy we’re all good but I do like the uh the cycle infrastructure pretty good this one going to be a problem to me no I think they’re quite all right gear shifts seem really nice and positive and the torque sensing motor um is ideal so the more effort you obviously put into it the uh more assistance it gives up to a particular point with there’s me doing 19 miles an hour again so it definitely definitely allows you to make some progress to just be careful of the silver one I did forget me gloves again before anyone comments I actually came out with our uh garage key this morning as well so my M hasn’t been able to get in the garage she’ll be fuming with me is that a pot hole it is just avoiding that we’re heading round to the left Mercedes is uh coming out you’re all right you’re okay yeah we’re okay to carry on I said people do make mistakes so don’t be uh don’t be pissy with people if they make look mistakes like that just do your best just to uh get on with it and just uh make it as I normally say a nonevent so all in all sun’s coming out I’m quite near Charles’s now so we’re going to wrap this up um the bike I really like it there’ll be links in the description it’s pretty decent value I think at the moment it’s about £1,000 I know that’s still expensive but compared to some of the other bikes I have reviewed it does seem good quality and it does seem pretty good value so please do support the people who support my channel um I am going to give this bike away unfortunately this time not to one of my viewers um I will do that as I go forward if people send me other bits I’ve got no need to have 34 bikes so um what to do I will be giving them away but this is already found a home I’ve promised it to some one um train Journeys let me know of your experiences on the trains are there enough in fact I’ve got to do a right turn here yeah I got a nice little space to go out all good so yeah please let me know of your experiences on uh on taking your bike on rail network um pretty positive I haven’t got to go home yet but um there’s no point me just replicating if there’s anything else that I find later on I’ll be sure to add it on to the video but for now that’s me done keep safe everyone I’ll see you soon

  1. Thank you for answering a question I have been interested in about travelling by train and cycle. Recent enquiries at my local station, some train companies only have 24-hour prebooking other companies allow bikes if space available. They all seem to quote only one or two bike spaces per train. I like the look of the infrastructure in Hull.

  2. 18 Kg light? Had a Ribble Endurance Ale electic bike , it weighed 13kg, had a 250 W Motor with a 250W battery inside the frame giving about 60 miles in eco mode. The carbon fibre version is even lighter.

  3. I'd love to take my e bike out on alot more trains, but GWR arent that great with bikes, with my bike being unable to fully fit into the rather awful spaces they give on their Networkers, which are what my local station mostly gets. I much prefer the racks on the IETs, as they fit my bike alot better, but in general, UK trains need much better bike provision though

  4. Well I for one can't wait for this collab ("Dashley Null" anyone?). Also getting on a train in the north seems nicer than in London/Essex haha.

  5. It is good to see some good cycle to train infrastructure and also good to see things have improved in some areas since I last commuted by train. Looking at other comments it appears the South East train network is still a "cattle wagon" in terms of getting as many people on as possible without much room for cycles. In fact, there wasn't much room for luggage if you was using the train to go away on holiday

Where I am now, I will admit to not looking too much at cycle spaces but I would imagine they are combined disabled / push chair / cycle areas at either end of the two carriage train (occasionally we might be upgraded to a four carriage train during "peak" times 👍 Not much of an issue as the trains are very rarely busy but like others have commented, there is usually an unwritten hierarchy on these types of trains which goes 1) Disabled -> 2) Push chair -> 3) Cycles rather than a first come first served. I do wonder if they could make better use of the space to enable everyone to use the train, especially when they generally aren't busy and don't need all the seats. What is wrong with a little standing room only in places?

  6. LNER are god awful when it comes to bikes (theyre pretty awful at most things to be fair). Four bike "spaces" on a nine carriage train. Each "space" is half of a tiny cupboard, requiring the cyclist to lift their bike vertically and manoevure it next to another bike in a space just wider than the handlebars.

  7. Took my bike on the train from Hull all over the country many times. Sometimes it’s good like this, but can go horribly wrong. Always very limited space and sometimes bad areas, for example on East Midlands trains they would often pile up bin bags in the so called cycle area.

Every operator has a different policy, some require a reservation. All reserve the right to not let you on, I had to argue my way onboard the last train (my original train was cancelled) in Settle in the dark/snow when the guard decided there was enough bikes already (there was physically enough space though).

There is no rail replacement service for cyclists, so if there is an incident on the line 100 miles from home and everyone gets loaded on to a bus, you are massively screwed.

It’s great when it works (and it’s quiet) but there’s no guarantee. These days I drive, it shouldn’t have to be like that though!

  8. I really enjoyed watching this, I would definitely have watched another 35 minutes of the trip back home. I like the cycling content and I'm subscribed to the cycling channel as well, but I'd like to see more videos like this using non-car modes of transport.

  9. Nice bike, very light (about 5kg lighter than my old Gazelle city bike which is not electric) . If I needed or wanted an electric bike I think I would go for this or something very similar.

  10. Last yeat when i was i geneva they had bike parks . Not sure the cost but imagine not expensive. What i did think was how much room they saved compared to cars. As i was staying in geneva all public transport was free in Geneva

  11. To be honest, our trains can barely handle people, nevermind bikes. I think the unreliability of the public transport 'network' makes a car (or bike, something owned and controlled by you) necessary for commuting. I am lucky to only have to travel in two directions one a week but it is too often I am delayed, get cancelled, etc that I am racing towards getting my driving test done.

  12. Techalogic seem to be always out of stock for their handlebar mounted cycling cameras. Pity as I would have bought one.

  13. Looks really good for the price, heavier than some of the specialized ones, but it's not £3000+.
The only bummer is that the freezing temps in winter aren't gonna be good for the battery if you can't bring the bike indoors.

  14. Would loved to have taken a bike on my commute after id alighted a train . 30 minutes walk at the other end in all types of weather. There was just no room

  15. Merseyrail has promoted the bike storage well but it’s only available at stations on the Merseyrail network. Go east of Lime Street and to Edge Hill, Wavertree, Huyton and St Helens stations or south to Moseley Hill, there are a few Sheffield stands but these don’t offer the same protection as the storage units.
Lifts can be challenging with bikes and if my memory serves me right the lift at Liverpool Central (Northern Line) is extremely small and would be a case of putting the bike up in the air.

Greater Manchester transport hubs such as bus stations and train stations within town centres and very crowded communities have a similar approach to the bike storage offering a container or shed but there are nowhere near as many as Merseyrail’s.

As for travelling on trains, my experience is they go where the bulky suitcase get left, in doorways

  16. Mereseyrail’s new class 777 were created using feedback from different groups such as families, commuters, cyclists, elderly and disabled people. Many other trains aren’t built like this hence the lacking space and onboard facilities. Instead they’re refurbished giving them a modernised look (new seat covers, redo electrics for audio/visual announcements and USB charging).

  17. Saw you at Lime Street during this video, enjoyed our short chat! Now tempted to get a bike like this for my commute each morning – was always put off because most of my walk is slightly up hill but that wouldn't matter with this

  18. Interesting as ever, Ashley. My views differ in some respects.

    – I think you were very fortunate with the the rail network. Network Rail the infra provider are diabolical in their attitude to accessibility, speaking more from a disabled access viewpoint than about standard cycles by able-bodied people. Things like wheelchair spaces being too small for 1/3 of wheelchairs as the standards are based on 1990s wheelchairs, non-enforcement when booked cycle slots are full of dumped suitcases, stations with no lifts, non-accessible cycle parking and so on. Many disabled people just don't bother as it will be so difficult.

    – The bike seems good and good value, and reviews well elsewhere too, so a decent compromise for horrible UK roads with the bigger tyres etc. I'd treat 18kg as quite heavy – my (also stealth) 700c e-bike including mudguards, rack, and all the rest, comes in at under 14kg, and is vintage 2015. That's a touch exceptional though, having a Gruber Assist with motor in the seatpost.

    – I'd probably disagree on the quality of infra in Hull, which has been a bit of a political battle between Lab and LD, but it's great to see the commentary.

Thanks. It's nice to see more presence from some radical change-demanders in your comments !!

  19. Maybe I just get the wrong trains but I've never had a commute involving a train where I've thought "yep, could reliably get a bike on this train", even though some offer bookable slots it's usually 2-4 for an entire train

  20. I've travelled by train with my bike and had no problems but I'm pretty sure any motor assisted or eletric bikes and scooters etc are not allowed on the railway, which is why you tried it with a bike that doesn't look like it's got eletric power, interesting video nonetheless

  21. Great bike! But this video also shows how deplorably dull commuting is in the UK 🤣 Our train networks are in desperate need of a revamp if we’re going to get less people using cars..

  22. Hi Ashley, I enjoyed this style of video.
I’ve got a question, what’s the best way to submit driving footage to Merseyside police? They don’t seem to use Operation snap.

    Thanks a lot

  23. Actually, I quite like your cycling jacket. Could you share a link for that please? My current hi-vis cycling jacket is absolutely knackered, so in the market for a new one ready for the next winter. Although I'm not convinced we've left the last one yet! 😂

  24. My train service doesn’t allow bikes or e scooters between the hours of 6am – 9am and 4pm – 6pm Monday to Friday. I kind of see why they do it, but then it kind of stops the whole driving to work no no into London. 😂😂 London rail is so screwed up 🙄

  25. Mersey rail trains seem really nice, Tyne and Wear metro is meant to get new trains soon to replace the 45 year old rolling stock, but they’ve been delayed so much.
Edit: there’s currently no space for bikes on the existing trains

  26. I have to admit that bike plus train travel is really good, much more environmentally friendly than driving, I also have a C21, I've been riding it for more than two months now, and it's simply stress-free to travel within five kilometers on a daily basis!

  27. I do cycle to the station, but never take it on the train due to space constraints. Greater Anglia does allow bikes on board except between Norwich and London. The new GA trains have (almost) level boarding so that it is easy to board and alight and means that a boarding ramp is not needed for all.

  28. Really good, informative piece. Understanding the issues which arise re lack of storage space on trains, particularly when encountering a group of like minded travellers I'd opt for a fold up model which at least can be stowed between the seat backs like any other item of hand luggage. I appreciate such models aren't to everyone's liking.

  29. Those hooks on the train are so much more convenient, here in Germany I've only used these annoying straps, that are there to attach your bike, wheelchair or stroller onto.

  30. Just wondering how easy it would be to get on and off the train and walk through the station with a bike would be during rush hour. The train and station will be rammed, and people aren't in the best of moods, so they won't be so courteous towards you.

  31. I wonder how it would work if you bought the ticket but then find the bike area of the train is at capacity? Would you be permitted a transfer or refund?

  32. public transport from my experience costs more and trips take so much longer. i did get train to bottom snowdon in my healthy years and the amount time it takes i could driven there a lot faster, and night run you get a clear run be even faster and if i had old diesel fiesta it be a lot cheaper, even my petrol its a tad cheaper and you decide when to travel not the government. i moved from town 3300 people to 50k people town near Coventry i got a job in cov thinking should be no issues getting in to cov before 8am it was impossible i quit the job because public transport. one my normal trips to the hospital the wait for bus and one may not turn up and you get 2-3 buses at the same time it happened many times that adds 3 buses 45 min and trip is around 40-50 min and in a car it a ten min trip. i planned a cheap way to Scotland i came in to an issue id be stuck in middle know where at 3am funny thing i did not bother going. on top that you so limited esp if you got bad health i tend to take roads less traveled and ive looked to get bus to certain places and bus stop was miles away, it is so much more limited to where you can go and at what time, even had over 7 hours standing on train to west wales in holiday season the train was dangerously overloaded ive never had that in a car. since i passed driving test i never use public transport again if anything it be a local taxi. also comfort too, time id get to place using a bus i might as well just head bad it trigger loads pain in my back the bumps curbs jumps the standing around waiting not inc the walk to stop, car travel a lot further and feel less pain, when buying car its few thing i check how it rides bumps how good seat, how it drives, you get what you get on public transport
