I am apparently becoming a sucker for neglected bikes😁

Saw this on the curb during cleanup week. It was pretty gummed up and rusted, but a complete strip down and cleaning brought it back to life. New parts include a flat black paint (you know, John Wick…The Continental), new tubes and tires, pedals, spare seat, and new cables all round, new and/or repacked bearings, and a chain.

It’s a beast of a bike, but it has a second chance at life. Plus tinkering on a new project was more fun than cleaning the garage🫣

Old Schwinns are great bikes to work on. Always good to see them getting a second life.

  2. Nice fix up. I did about the same number only it is a ’70’s “varsity”. When the wheels were swapped out for Araya Aluminum wheels, the ride got righteous. The 7.5# forged steel fork on the varsity was perfect for the intended users of these tanks. I never saw one break. I am like you, too. Fun to fix the rolling stock since they are ageless. I picked up a 1972 Super Sport for $10 a few years back. The frame looks like the Varsity, but way lighter. Looks just like a Continental with the hollow fork. It is overbuilt and quite refined looking for a mass produced bike (fillet brazed joinery) . Inspired reading your post.
