Embarking on our sailing journey with newfound confidence, we set sail across the Bay of Biscay, bidding farewell to France and charting our course towards Spain. Despite battling seasickness, Cat perseveres while James takes on the majority of helm duties. Our journey is predominantly powered by motor, ensuring a safe passage across the bay and a rewarding sense of achievement upon reaching our destination.
Navigating through the complexities of visas and bureaucratic hurdles, we diligently adhere to regulations to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted voyage. Each day presents new lessons and challenges, yet our passion for the journey only grows stronger with each passing wave. Join us as we embrace the learning curve and revel in the exhilarating experience of ocean sailing.

hi we are James Katherine George and Harry and we’ve decided to live on a sailboat and travel the world after our maiden voyage to Britney France we headed back to lell where we would have some minor issues looked at on our boat in this video we wait for a good weather window then cross the Bay of bisc a trip we’ve been told can be dangerous and unpredictable we hope you enjoy this video don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already and thank you for watching we are in the beautiful Lara shell where our was built and taking the opportunity to get some issues looked at on our boat we’re still not getting our apparent wind speed and having some issues with our GPS location reading while waiting for the perfect weather window we took the opportunity for a road trip and like any responsible adult we took the kids to cognac to visit the Hennessy Museum wasn’t sure how this was going to go but it was a great tour and we all really enjoyed it you see me feel cognac was beautiful the kids spent hours in this park enjoying playing in the gardens if you have time while you’re visiting lell I’d also recommend visiting St amilon for a day trip it’s a very pretty French Village with some really nice French wine can I have can I have both please we met Christian here on the dock who showed the kids some pretty cool knots before we left we love the Sailing Community and how supportive they are thanks [Music] Christian good [Music] one y welc done hey we are leaving France today um heading for Spain we’re all ready to go it’s going to take us 2 and a half days [Music] hopefully James is just warming up the engines yep kids are quickly quickly downloading some stuff on their iPads and then all them just going quickly clean my teeth quickly clean your teeth and then you’ll be ready to go it is just beautiful today absolutely beautiful what’s the forecast forecast is good light WIS so we we won’t go that fast yeah cats just put the sails up okay it’s very light winds guess what’s happened all of a sudden what we’ve got apparent wind and true wind oh is it just kicked in yeah that’s so weird so weird I I have to message robs again just measured him saying I’ve left and it’s not fixed I’ve been there get it fixed it you haven’t fixed it I’m going to message him and go you won’t believe it we got water speed and apparent Wing angle so the problem for the first four weeks is that we have uh not that I really understand the whole thing but I’m getting to grips with it the true wind speed is the speed of the wind if I was standing still and I could feel the wind on my face that’s how fast the wind is going but imagine riding your bike then as you start to ride the bike you feel more wind so that’s the apparent wind and there are some more um complex specters of how you figure out what we should be doing our problem is now that we’re close H so we need to trim that sand all right I’ll do that we spent the first 12 hours of the trip motor sailing which is where we still have the sails up but just not enough wind that we need to put the motors on to I’m hoping that uh just after lunch we up the motor on for the rest of the day yes can’t see it can you give me some so what happens usually is if there’s a boat that comes near to us we get like a little alarm um if they’ve got AIS on their boat and then we can pull up all their information we can see how fast they’re going it gives us a time to like a collision based on the direction that we’re traveling and the direction they’re traveling um but if they don’t have ai on their boat um we yeah James has just asked me to move just a little bit to starboard 5° which I can do we’ve got the auto pilot on um we just turn the boat a little bit just to make sure that we aren’t going to collide with them I think we’ll be passing them soon anyway but yeah they’ve got their AIS we just just comes up on the screen and if they don’t have AIS we have to keep our eyes healed someone really needs to be at the helm all the time you okay yeah what’s the better nothing just don’t to get too close you look a little bit stressed 7 and a half knots as well thank you money can we go to channel 72 over going to channel 72 had you do that 7 yeah nice to see you out here um just have one question for you or maybe two uh have you turned off your AIS now uh no we haven’t have we disappeared off of your screen yeah I’m I’m losing the target all the time uh not the big ship behind us but um I mean we’re not more than two miles from each other and I losing you once in a while oh uh can’t explain that we’re not touching the AIS at all um I’ll turn it off and I’ll turn it back on again and see if it resets itself that was our first caller that’s how it’s done where are they right under [Applause] the at the end of our first day crossing the Bay of bisc it was so special sh to get a visit from some dolphins at [Music] sunset done 65 nautical miles so far today we just had dolphins and a sunset so what a perfect day eh we do have a couple of boats about a mile off our starboard side I heard on the radio about 10 minutes ago they were talking to each other we’ve had Dolphins we’ve had dolphins and I’m like oh that’s so cool and then 10 minutes later yeah they were the sun’s going down the temperature starting to drop a little bit got the Shivers anyway what a nice Sunset look at this it’s lunch time on day two of our sale kids are done really really well just having some lunch aren’t you we’re in Spanish Waters James has been doing really well as well I’m very tired and very I think we’ll be in Spain tomorrow morning hopefully it’s finally just gone a little bit flatter we’ve been murdering most of the way it’s just no wind so I’m going to eat some food go back to sleep hopefully almost the end of day two it’s not much wind so James is just pulling in the sails now getting ready for a night motoring along really there’s no wind and I get to sleep the first shift yes [Music] after a 48-hour trip we made it to heon the city is full of charm with its Bay windowed buildings interesting architecture lots of restaurants and beautiful sandy beaches with clear water it’s well worth a visit we are in or it’s our very first stop in Spain that will start our shenan who knows what’s going to happen we no one knows when we left the trip I checked this morning was 250 Nal miles so we were averaging a good speed because we were on the mot we thought it would take two and a half days actually took two days but that’s because we moted used a lot of fuel the Bay of bisc it’s really changeable and not that predictable so all the weather forecasts we’ve had give you the wind and the wave height could be cuz we’re new and they never get it right and as we were going across there was parts of the bay that even said on the GPS um what did it say about the sea it said sensitive sea area so what happens it’s 50 m 250 M 300 M 180 M for a very very long time then all of a sudden it goes 1,000 2,000 5,000 over a short distance and I think that’s what causes those confused seat I’m very tired from yesterday I spent a lot of time at the H you did you did so well you so good at it but we won’t be able to I can’t do that every Tri I know all I want to do when I get on the boat if we’re on a passage is sleep and that’s because I know that when I’m asleep I don’t get sick so I had some Tears On The Dock cuz um so sick and I was so tired and James is like get the line on get and I’m like I can’t I just started crying we are so new to this but I see land and I’m like oh that’s really really close next thing I know there’s a big contain ship go between us and the land I’m oh I already thought I was close good we made it just you guys want to go for a walk along the beach [Music] all right let’s go catch up with [Music] [Music] Harry hands up if you’d go in there you go there this afterno the water’s 19 1 12° yeah it’s still going so when we came in we sailed along the side of the coast here like that boat is and then we came in around there y [Music] [Music] we are in Spain which means we got to change the flag which is this is exactly what it felt like when we came in yesterday morning was like foggy cold but then it turned out to be a really beautiful day so today we are going to the customs office to stamp our passports into Spain um so we’re going to try and get a cab there cuz it’s a bit of a walk look it’s really foggy this is the customs Office well we’re not sure because on the map that we put in in the car was just a bunch of diesel tanks these brought us here thinking that this is the next best thing this looks more like a customs office we trying to check in to Spain with our passports and get a stamp come to the boat every day but you can’t get a stamp if you want a stamp you got come to the office so we’ll see how we go I think we’ll be fine I’ll let you do Tom turns out we weren’t in the right place so this policeman showed us to another building after getting the impression that nobody knew quite what to do with us we were then driven into a restricted [Music] zone so George and Harry have been arrested after being at the uh Visa place for an hour trying to trying to figure out our Visa problem is they don’t allow taxis or buses to come in here so today we’re going for a ride to prison in a police car close the door close it big [Music] bang she was under the idea thaten started for we entered France because we didn’t have a stamp coming out of FR yeah but no yeah they’re right they should have given us a stamp in France so now they’ve suggested we write a letter to the French Embassy which at least we’ll have in writing yeah to say that we exited we went to the um customs office and asked for stamp in they tell us no it’s confusing cuz it’s not something that they see every day right right couldn’t get their head around that shenen didn’t start for us until we arrived here yeah it should reset itself once we get to jab check into ja and then when we check back into a shenen you get one story from one person you get another and then like it seems like it’s open to interpretation we had three people in the same room we’re four five I counted them they were five all saying arguing about Googling on their phones trying to figure out I think next time what I need to do is take in a print out from the from the French Embassy website to say about our Visa cuz it doesn’t actually say on the Visa anything so I don’t like it’s not very clear only that we can have multiple entries in and out of France and it doesn’t and that’s for a year and then I think I should also have a layout of what dates we were in France what dates we’re in Spain so we like can clearly see it and then um what language do you do that in well do in English and then I can just take a picture of it and translate thank God for Google Google Translate because that would have been a nightmare we had our Google translate on our phone they had their translate on their phone we were like conversing through phones like what an amazing um his Google translate kept going he was obviously whatever he was saying he was like why doesn’t it work for me he kept saying why doesn’t it work for me why doesn’t it work for me that was because it was but I must say they were so kind one policeman drove us to where we were supposed to be and then the other policeman drove us back to where here cuz we were like we’ll just get a taxi and they were like no no no no we’ll take you we’ll take you so and it’s not a short trip either it’s like 10 minutes drive across town so we’re very thankful to them for trying to help us and they were just like you just the French they should have stamped your passport we just don’t want it to be an issue down the line so I think we need to do everything that we can now to make sure that we get St they don’t say you’ve overstayed your Shen or anything like that and it completely ruined our plans [Applause] yeah back to the boat or to a coffee shop boat please the boat you want to go pick up your swimmers and stuff let’s do a boat go back to the boat who vot to Cafe oh this we could walk to that adults get two points no they don’t you cheat I was going to walk up to that place where you get the cookies but it doesn’t matter oh should we go get some cookies yes cookies oh do we need to do another we need to do another vote I’ve got to do work oh yeah we’ve got to work and and you got to do school so damn it all right yeah true let’s go back to the boat go back to the boat to do some school work watch saga continues so we just got back to the Pontoon come on D two Customs guys waiting for us on the H we’ just been to the to the office to the office so we made it across the bay of bisc we managed to successfully check into Spain and we’re ready to get going again in the next video we travel along the coast of Spain where we pick up some family and continue South towards the med please consider subscribing if you would like to see our future videos and if you like this one give it a thumbs up and say hello in the comments see you next time

Great video. Really enjoyed it ❤
Wow…what an adventure!! Loved that you all kept your cool as you navigated through the hurdles on sea and land! Very impressed with George's knot skills. How timely and kind for Christian to teach. We also really enjoyed hearing how you tackled through all the issues and also your feedback on those experiences. Great videos James and Catherine 👍
Great video! Seeing the dolphins must have been so magical. The customs part is so interesting, what a debacle. Can’t wait for the next video!
Hi guys, you look really settled, it’s great to see, looking forward to your adventures, love from Yorkshire xx
Great start to your trip! Love the learning curve your on!
❤ from 🇨🇦 BC
Check out sailing Helios they solved the Schengen Visa issue.
I would think your Schengen stay would start in France because it’s in the zone. But I don’t know a lot about it.
*Ok, I read your comment to someone else. These countries really should get on the same page.
Hellow!!
Wow, you guys are doing so well on such a steep learning curve.
Good video
Hi from NZ. Did your AIS issue get sorted? Was good of that boat to let you know.
Hi guys another great vlog but what a lot of confusion maybe you could send a message to Keith on sailing Zatara as they have sailed around the world and still going as they maybe able to give some advice stay safe and have and safe boating cheers Barry From Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
Hi Catherine it would probably be best if you can speak to some of your oceans cruiser friends someone who is into fishing. You don't need much as some people only use a hand reel with a lure which they tow behind the boat.
I would suggest a sturdy rod, just easier. Should you catch a tuna or mahi mahi you need to watch some youtube videos on how to cut them up.
Have a great day.

Ripper video👌
Increase vegemite consumption to decrease seasickness
🤣
You should just use one engine when on passage. You use much less fuel(also increase your range), you reduce your engine hours and therefore how after you need to do maintenance. Nearly all cat owners do this.
You should try the scopolamine patches for your seasickness. You wear them for up to three days and seem to really help people. You don’t have to keep taking pills (which you then throw up).
Gijón is a beautiful city! We had an exchange student from there, and went to visit a few years ago. Great intro to Spain.
Hey guys, you asked for a hello so, 'Hello'. Don't quite know where you'd be by now but I imagine you're in the Med and hopefully things are getting warmer.
Nice adventure. One tip, you should use external wireless little microphones for a better sound.
Greetings from Holland
Hi, Great channel !, I like how you are progressing/learning by just doing it, and do not seem phased by anything. well done, looking forward to seeing your travels progress.
Rather scary you just walked into Spain ,without going through customs!
As I understand it if you have a French Visa, you can travel throughout Europe whilst you have the Visa, Once that has expired then you go on the Schengen zone clock . I took this from Google "As a general rule you may cross any Schengen border with visa issued by any Schengen country."
Spain has the best motion sickness medicin. Buy at any Pharmacia: Biodramime with cafeina, also sold as Sinfamar with cafeina. (Also available without cafeina, but you ll sleep al day) buy enough for the rest of your trip 😉
