  1. You know, today humans have been flying for more than a century, but that wasn't the case during the war. 'Largest air armada in the history of mankind' would have sounded rather odd in 1943, when military aviation was barely 30 years old. It's a bit shocking perhaps, but Roosevelt and Eisenhower were already teenagers when the Wright brothers were testing their first airplane (and Churchill was about 30 years old).

    And yes, the RAF had assembled quite larger air armadas…
