South Dalton | East Yorkshire, England.
17.04.2024
This walk really surprised me just how beautiful and serene it was and I couldn’t believe that after all these years I had never visited this stunning church considering how close it is to home. It really is the best kept secret in the Wolds.
South Dalton is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire only a stone’s throw away from Lund village which I walked on the same day (Serene Walk through Hidden Gem English Village in the Wolds | Lund, Yorkshire’)
The village forms part of the stunning Dalton Estate which is where I parked up and started the walk. And what a gorgeous estate it is too. Green grass and old trees as far as the eye can see, with sheep and cattle grazing all across the pastures. For a true sense of the majesty of this whole area I suggest watching the ‘South Dalton From The Air’ video on the channel and be sure to look out for the rainbow and the red kite soaring around the church spire.
The estate is owned and managed by the Hotham family which has possessed land in the area for generations with the 18th-century hall being the home of Lord Hotham. The Estate houses are of rows of cottages and Tudor style houses, some with date plates dating as far back as 1706.
South Dalton is listed in the Domesday Book as “Delton” which derives from the Old English for a “farmstead or village in a valley” according to A Dictionary of British Place Names. In 1066 Ealdred, the Archbishop of York, held the Lordship, this transferring by 1086 to the canons of Beverley, with Thomas of Bayeux, the later Archbishop of York, as Tenant-in-chief to King William I. By 1260 the settlement name was recorded as “Suthdalton”.
The quite beautiful parish church of St Mary was designated a Grade I listed building in 1968 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Its spire is over 200 feet (61 m) tall and is a prominent local landmark. It was designed by John Loughborough Pearson and built between 1858 to 1861 as a replacement for a brick structure. His work can be seen dotted across England, including North Ferriby which you can also find on the channel. Alongside the church there are the almshouses dating back to 1873 which are described as ‘charitable housing provided to people in a particular community, especially during the Middle Ages’.
Inside the church there is a beautiful black and white marble monument in memory of Sir John Hotham, 2nd Baronet which is based on the Cecil tomb at Hatfield and dates from after 1697. Sir John is represented in life, as a reclining knight in full armour, with his helmet and gauntlet beside him, and in death, as a skeleton. Supporting the four corners of the tomb are statues representing the cardinal virtues.

|| About Walk The World Away ||
Hello everyone, my name’s Jamie Paul and this is my walking channel. Since I love the outdoors and walking in nature so much I decided to start filming my walks so that I could share them with you lovely people wherever you are in the world. In an ideal world I would probably build a small house on top of one of the Lake District fells, grow my beard down to the ground, and walk forever through the beautiful Cumbrian mountains until I could walk no more. Sigh. But instead, being a more practical kind of bloke, I am on the search for smaller, more accessible walks around England that I can capture on film and share with you all.
I focus my attention on the most scenic and peaceful walks I can find, either in the countryside or along the coast, and I do love to check out old villages, cities and towns too if they pass the picturesque test and have some historical interest thrown into the mix.
Let me know in the comments if you know of any beautiful places to amble around that I just haven’t considered yet. And yes, this a new channel so bear with me as I endeavour to bring you high definition 4K video with quality sound. I have an arts degree in photography, so I know a little bit about how things should look, and quality is the name of the game here.
And as always, please like and subscribe if you love to walk too, and we can build the channel together as we walk the world away.
Peace,
Jamie Paul 🕊️
