Nope. It’s a safety washer they stop your front wheel falling off IF you some how haven’t tightened your wheel nuts… it’s a safety requirement for most complete bikes, but they’re not remotely required, as obviously you’ll tighten your front wheel!

This is a safety feature of questionable value. The idea is if your axle nut comes loose, the hook will keep your wheel from falling off. Fact is, if you don’t notice your wheel is loose, you probably won’t notice it if this washer is keeping it on, so it will eventually fall off anyway. You can replace it with an ordinary washer… and make sure you keep your axle nuts properly tightened.

I take them off and replace with a normal washer
